*Call for Papers: ‘Pictorial Spaces – Boundaries and Transitions’

Deadline for Submissions: 1 February 2012
*
We are pleased to accept articles for the upcoming issue of the interdisciplinary yearbook Jahrbuches immersiver Medien on ‘Pictorial Spaces – Boundaries and Transitions’. Submissions may be in English or German.

Delving into pictorial spaces or the notion of presence in fictional worlds of films or books can be described as immersive phenomena. As concrete physical or imaginative acts of stepping into mediates spaces, immersion may thus best be described as a movement or transition into pictorial spaces. Such modes of immersion are not limited to panorama images or virtual realities but also apply to the reception of alleged shallow images of a film, a picture or the fictional spaces of works of literature. Whether we read a book, watch a film, play a game or enter a panorama – immersion seems to describe a key transition process of media usage: recipients become participants. Physical and active participation, thereby, have become central to the aesthetic structures of media impact. The boundaries of actual and mediated spaces, indeed, seem to collapse when immersive media affect fictional realisations as well as the actual terms of their reception.

The yearbook is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary publication aimed at an international academic readership. Its focus lies upon multimedia or audiovisual media (360-degree projections, visual culture, film, video games, etc.). An indicative list of suitable topics for articles may include:
- technology and theory of immersive environments
- perception and aesthetics of immersive media
- strategies of transition and distinction
- characteristics of immersive media in contrast to similar phenomena
- psychological preconditions of illusion, immersion and involvement
- historical developments of immersive pictorial spaces
- application of immersive pictorial spaces

The yearbook is published annually since 2011 as themed issues, including contributions in German and English. It is published by the Institute of Immersive Media at the University of Applied Sciences Kiel in Germany. Submitted articles must be original contributions that engage with recent studies dealing with immersive theory and practice. In addition to a years’ special theme we are also looking for general articles dealing with aspects of immersion, submissions about the usage of immersive media, interviews and results from applied science. Contributions should be 5000 to 8000 words in length. Please send an abstract, brief biographical information, contact details and your article to (immersive-medien /at/ fh-kiel.de). A style sheet can be obtained through our website at www.immersive-medien.de.
