Cartography and Geographical Knowledge in the Public Sphere

On the occasion of the 32nd International Geographical Congress to be
held at Cologne, Germany, the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography,
in collaboration with the International Geographical Union Commission on
the History of Geography, organises the international Pre-Congress
"Cartography and Geographical Knowledge in the Public Sphere".
The Pre-Congress Paper Sessions will be held on August 22, 2012 at the
Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography located at Leipzig. The Field
Trip will take place from August 21 to August 26, 2012 and includes
visits to Leipzig, Gotha, Eisenach and the Rhine Gorge, among other
locations, with a final rail ride to Cologne.
Pre-Congress Themes
Papers are welcome especially dealing with:
-Social history of cartography;
-Production, trade and consumption of maps;
-Field and interaction of scientific, commercial, journalistic, military
and school cartography;
-Connections between cartography and academic geography;
-Interdisciplinary, intercultural and international knowledge;
-Transfer within the history of geography and cartography;
-Role of cartography in shaping scientific knowledge, nation building,
and education;
-Popular and non-academic geographies and their role in the public image
of geography and places.
Authors are encouraged to submit papers for oral presentations
concerning the aforementioned themes. One-page abstract (40 lines
maximum), either in English or in French, should be submitted using the
Registration Form available at the Symposium websites
http://web.univ-pau.fr/RECHERCHE/UGIHG/ or www.ifl-leipzig.de.
Registration form and abstracts should be sent no later than December
15, 2012 to Dr. Bruno Schelhaas via email ((B_Schelhaas /at/ ifl-leipzig.de)).
All the abstracts will be reviewed by a Scientific Committee,
coordinated by Dr. Bruno Schelhaas (Leibniz Institute for Regional
Geography), Dr. Ute Wardenga (Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography)
and Dr. Jacobo García-Álvarez (Carlos III University of Madrid, Chairman
of the IGU Commission on the History of Geography). The review process
will be finished on January 31, 2012; information to all authors will
follow immediately after that.
