The COST Action ‘Transforming Audiences, Transforming Societies’ is pleased to announce the publication of two research reports:

Overview of European audience research
Edited by H. Bilandzic, N. Carpentier, G. Patriarche, C. Ponte, K.C. Schrøder, E. Vossen and F. Zeller

The state of audience research in European countries is not yet properly charted due to the fragmented and varied nature of the field. Obtaining an overview was both an objective of the Action in its own right, and a precondition of other achievements. For the first meeting of the Working Groups in Lisbon (November 11-13, 2010), the Steering Group of the Action invited the members to submit short national essays that review existing and emerging audience research in their respective countries. The reviews could be theoretical, topical, methodological, empirical or institutional. In total, 58 essays covering the 30 participating countries were delivered and are available on the Action website at: http://www.cost-transforming-audiences.eu. This research report brings together these 58 essays as well as a tentative synthesis in the concluding section.

Media literacy: Ambitions, policies and measures
Edited by S. Livingstone

European scholars and policy stakeholders are concerned that, in an ever-more complex digital media ecology, the demands on audiences to become media literate are growing. While stakeholders work to develop new initiatives, academic research is vital both to inform and critique. Entitled ‘Media literacy: Ambitions, policies and measures’, this report brings together experts from different perspectives to generate a timely account of media literacy in Europe. COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research at the European level. Website: http://www.cost.eu.

The COST Action ‘Transforming Audiences, Transforming Societies’ (2010-2014) is coordinating research efforts into the key transformations of European audiences within a changing media and communication environment, identifying their complex interrelationships with the social, cultural and political areas of European societies. A range of interconnected but distinct topics concerning audiences are being developed by four Working Groups: (1) New media genres, media literacy and trust in the media; (2) Audience interactivity and participation; (3) The role of media and ICT use for evolving social relationships; and (4) Audience transformations and social integration.
