Description

Based in the Bristol Interaction and Graphics group within the Department
of Computer Science, you will have skills in ethnographic studies and work
on a project exploring physical and digital aspect of community.

You will work on the University of Local Knowledge project alongside
principal project partners, to explore community interactions between
online and real-world settings. You will study the emerging social
practices surrounding our technical deployments, community workshops and
interactions, with the overall goal of identifying and capturing the ways
in which successful physical/virtual community deployments are conducted,
and answering specific questions within that remit as required by our work
programme.

You will work closely with a second Research Assistant in Computer Science
to inform their technical designs through your studies, and help assess the
impact of the deployed technologies. You will be supervised by Dr. Mike
Fraser (Computer Science), Dr Angela Piccini (Drama), and Penny Evans,
Creative Director at Knowle West Media Centre, and work with other members
of the ULK team from project partners across Bristol including, Arnolfini,
BBC, Pervasive Media Studio and the University of the West of England.

We require applicants with prior expertise in conducting ethnography,
preferably working with communities of interest 'in the wild' through a
background in socially engaged arts or Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
You will have a strong HCI background working on socially inclusive
community-driven technology projects.

The project is funded by EPSRC and lasts for eighteen months. If
successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent
contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research
experience. Further information can be found at
