[ecrea] International Review of Social Research
Tue Jul 05 08:17:23 GMT 2011
*International Review of Social Research* (www.irsr.eu), an international,
scholarly peer-reviewed journal, is currently seeking submissions. The
journal publishes original work (unpublished anywhere else), grounded in all
areas of sociology, social/cultural anthropology and cognate disciplines
such as cultural studies, social policy and industrial relations. We also
encourage the submission of research articles that cover emergent,
borderland and unexplored topics in both sociology and anthropology. All
research topics and methodological strategies are considered valuable, as
long as articles are both theoretically and empirically grounded.
Comparative, ethnographic, critical and space-sensitive approaches are
particularly welcomed.
Please note that *articles may, but are not required to address the theme of
the special issue.*
*COMING ISSUES*
*VOLUME 1, ISSUE 3 (October 2011),* *Special issue on* ‘*Environmental
values and environmental change’. *This issue, whose guest editors are
Laura
Nistor and Filip Alexandrescu, will be devoted to environmental sociology.
Environmental sociology is a relatively young research area, but one which
has been gaining increasing importance, as new environmental problems and
risks spark debate throughout the world. Current environmental problems such
as climate change, ozone depletion, the growing quantity of waste, and urban
pollution are increasingly viewed as not just environmental threats but also
salient social facts. As a response, new perspectives and theories are being
developed, aiming to explain the relationship between human society and
environmental systems, the role that various groups within society can play
in the mitigation of environmental problems, and the ways in which
institutions and individuals develop attitudes and actions towards the
environment. The issue will include a contribution by and a forum around the
article of Michael Redclift (King’s College, University of London), while
other articles cover issues such as organic farming and fair trade practices
in Western Mexico, energy-saving renovations in Bulgaria and Latvia, risk
and urban waste in Italy, Lake Baikal etc. The issue will also host a forum
around the article ‘Identity and the New Nationalist Pronouncements’, by
Jean-Claude Kaufmann, with contributions by distinguished sociologists and
anthropologists such as Zygmunt Bauman (University of Leeds), Richard
Handler (University of Virginia), Doris Bühler-Niederberger (University of
Wuppertal), Natacha Gagné (University of Ottawa), Christophe Serra Mallol
(Centre Edgar Morin) and Andrea Speafico (Instituto de Ciências Sociais,
University of Lisbon).

*VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 (February 2012),* *Special issue on* ‘*Material Culture
and Consumption – Perspectives from the Global South’*. This issue,
*edited
by **Carmen Rial** *(Federal University of Santa Catarina, *Brazil)*,*
**Angela
Souza** *(Federal University for Latin American Integration, Brazil)
and* **Sandra
Rubia Silva** *(Tuiuti University, Brazil) covers the theme of *‘Material
Culture and Consumption – Perspectives from the Global South’**. *In
light
of current developments, this special issue seeks historical studies and
culturally informed critiques of different forms of consumption in the
Global South. Contributions grounded in empirical research (especially
qualitative) are particularly welcomed. We are especially interested in
papers that analyze the diverse genres of material culture. Essays that
unearth earlier precedents for this current phenomenon, or works that reveal
how past theories can be re-evaluated in the light of emerging dynamics of
consumption in the Global South are also welcomed.
