The international conference "multi.player", hosted by the University of
Hohenheim (Germany), will take a closer look at the various forms of
human interaction in digital games. The aim of the conference is to
bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines interested in
social interaction in games, including (but not limited to) the fields
of communication research, media studies, sociology, psychology,
education studies, and economics.The conference is co-organized by the
TWG „Digital Games Research“, the „Sociology of Media Communication“
section of the German Communication Association (DGPuK) and the ERC
research group „The social fabric of virtual life“.
Keynote speakers:
- Professor Richard A. Bartle: "Types of Users of Player Types".
Dr. Richard A. Bartle is Professor of Computer Game Design at the
University of Essex, UK. He is best known for having co-written in 1978
the first virtual world, MUD, and for his 1996 Player Types model which
has seen widespread adoption by the MMO industry.
- Professor Mark Griffiths: "Online gaming addiction: does it really
exist?".
Dr. Mark Griffiths works at the School of Social Sciences at Nottingham
Trent University. He is one of the world's leading experts in research
on digital games addiction
- Professor Torill Mortensen: "Phased out: togetherness and parallel
play in multi-user games"
Torill Elvira Mortensen is associate professor at the IT-University of
Copenhagen, Denmark. Her research is directed towards games and online
culture, focusing on multi-user games and social media.
- Professor Yvonne de Kort: "How to win friends - gaming as a socially
situated experience"
Dr. Yvonne de Kort is associate professor of environmental psychology in
the research group Human-Technology Interaction at Eindhoven University
of Technology. Her research focuses most on social interaction,
well-being and health of people in virtual, mediated, or augmented spaces.
The thematic sessions will address to the following topics:

- Social interaction in games
- Risks and challenges of social gaming
- Learning and social games
- Co-located gaming
- Production and construction of games
- Design and social aspects of gaming
- MMORPGs
The conference program includes a special round table session „Industry
meets academia“ featuring top industry professionals, and a first
