[ecrea] Conference in Macedonia on Journalism Education
Tue Jun 21 15:09:52 GMT 2011
Conference:
*„**Journalism Education**, **Professional Values and Cultural Diversity**“*
Tuesday, 28 June 2011, Holiday Inn, Skopje
The School of Journalism and Public Relations, in cooperation with the
UNESCO Venice Office, organizes an international conference /„Journalism
Education, professional values and cultural diversity“/*,* which will
take place on *28.06. 2011 (**Tuesday**) from 10 – 15h, „Holiday Inn“,*
Skopje.
The media, especially those that publish news and information, have
central role in mirroring and building cultural diversity in the
Macedonian society. They influence the opinions and beliefs of
individuals, as well as their perceptions on other social and cultural
groups and communities. The education for journalism is by its essence
an education for democracy, citizens’ participation, freedom of
expression and other human rights, including the right to be different.
The contemporary converged technologies, the Internet and the fast
changes in society have changed the conditions in which the journalists
work and require from them to have multiple competencies, skills and
understandings. In the same time, the journalists are still exposed to
different political and economic pressures, which permanently keep open
the debate on professional standards and ethical values.
Professors from Netherlands, Denmark, United Kingdom and Macedonia will
participate in the discussion. They will debate about the competencies
and values of the contemporary journalism profession in Macedonia and
other European countries. In addition, the key findings from the
research on the current situation with diversity reporting in Macedonian
media will be presented, as well as the results from the European
Competence Profile project, conducted by the European Journalism
Training Association (EJTA).
In the first part of the conference, the establishment of the UNESCO
Chair in Media, Dialogue and Mutual Understanding at the School of
Journalism and Public Relations will be officially promoted. The purpose
of the Chair shall be to contribute to fostering social cohesion,
multicultural understanding and intercultural communication among
different cultural groups. To this end, the Chair shall promote an
integrated system of research, training, information and documentation
in the fields of the media, journalism and communication studies with a
strong emphasis on intercultural communication and diversity reporting.
It will serve as a means of facilitating collaboration between
high-level, internationally recognized researchers and teaching staff of
the School and other institutions in the Republic of Macedonia and
elsewhere in Europe.
