Ph.D Programmes ANNOUNCEMENT - First Call for applications

XXVII Cycle - Academic Year 2011/2012

Art. 1 - Ph.D programmes

Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna has published the announcement for the admission to the Ph.D programmes under the following Schools:

All the information regarding the competition (research topics, number of positions, admission requirements, selection procedure and criteria) can be found in each Ph.D programme table (http://www.unibo.it/Portale/Ricerca/Dottorati+di+ricerca/bandiXXVII.htm ).

Each course will start only if at least three students will enrol. The above mentioned XXVII Cycle doctoral programmes will start on 1st October 2011 and will have a duration of three years.

Art. 2 - Application requirements

In order to participate in the competition, candidates must hold:

- an Italian university degree (vecchio ordinamento - 4 years);

- an Italian university degree (laurea specialistica/magistrale - 3+2 years);

- an academic Master’s degree awarded by a foreign institution/University, validated as equivalent (equipollente) to an Italian degree by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and research (MIUR) or acknowledged as equivalent by the Selection Committee for the sole purposes of the selection. Applicants must be in possession of the qualifications required by June 23rd, 2011 (deadline of this announcement). Candidates whose degree are to be awarded after the deadline of the announcement will be admitted sub condicione. In such a case, they must provide written evidence that the degree will be awarded by September 30th, 2011. Failing to prove this will result in the exclusion from the Ph.D programme.

APPLICANTS IN POSSESSION OF A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY DEGREE

For the sole purposes of the selection, applicants in possession of a foreign University degree must attach to the application form copy of the such degree together with the transcript of records translated into Italian or English. Those who are about to obtain a foreign University degree must attach the transcript of records translated into Italian or English.

Other additional documents, duly certified and translated into Italian or English, which may be judged appropriate for the purpose of the evaluation (Diploma Supplement, courses, programmes, exams, etc.) can be also attached.

Art. 4 - Competition

Dates and venues of the competitions can be found in each Ph.D programme table (http://www.unibo.it/Portale/Ricerca/Dottorati+di+ricerca/bandiXXVII.htm ).

The official communication of the date of competitions will be provided by the Ph.D programme

tables only. Competitions are based on examinations and/or on qualifications’ evaluation. Candidates are requested to not attend the evaluation meetings. In order to participate in the competitions, candidates must show proof of their identity with a valid ID at the indicated venue and date. Candidates permanently residing abroad and willing to take the oral examination by videoconference over Skype (through webcam) must provide their own registered Skype contact/name in the application form. Please, refer to the Ph.D programme table of interest to find out if the videoconference exam is permitted. Where foreseen, examinations can also be taken in another language different from Italian. Please, check the chosen Ph.D programme table to find out if such option is available.

Art. 5 - Selection Committees and ranking lists

The Selection Committee is made of three members selected among University professors and researchers and may include up to two experts from both public and private research institutions. The nomination of experts is mandatory in case of public or private entities funding doctoral scholarships. At the end of the evaluation procedure, the scores assigned to the candidates by each Selection Committee will be published on the website indicated on the Ph.D programme table of interest and/or will be available at the venue where the examinations took place.

Art. 6 - Ranking lists

The final ranking lists will be published on the website: http://www.almawelcome.unibo.it

No communication and information on personal positions in the ranking list will be provided to candidates, being Almawelcome the sole and official means of publicity.

Extra-quota positions (posti in sovrannumero)

Extra-quota positions, not exceeding 100% of the ordinary positions, could be available for:

a) eligible foreign candidates holding a scholarship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or from their own Country institutions (please attach documents certifying the awarding of the

scholarship/funding to the application form);

b) eligible foreign candidates from Countries having a specific inter-governmental agreement with Italy and/or an ongoing Memorandum of Understanding with the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna;

c) eligible foreign candidates selected within international programmes where UniBo is directly

involved.
