[ecrea] European Media Policy 2-2010

Tue Oct 12 08:30:46 GMT 2010

Welcome to European Media
Policy, a newsletter from NORDICOM providing
an up-date on policy developments at the European level.

The No. 2, 2010 issue of European Media Policy provides a summary and
analysis of some of the main topics discussed recently:

- After months of heated debate, the EU Parliament has finally adopted
the controversial Gallo report on enforcement of intellectual property
rights.

- There has been increasing pressure on Internet service providers to
police the data they transfer. Now the EU Commission has launched a
consultation on the liability of such "intermediaries" and
related issues.

- Concern about online, so-called behavioural advertising has been
voiced in several EU institutions as well as by data protection
authorities and consumer groups,

- Intimidation of journalists and abuse of the protection of sources is
increasing in Europe and in several countries new laws restricting press
freedom are being introduced. This worries lawmakers and many others.
