Bollywood and the South Asian Diaspora
TOPIA 26, Fall 2011
This special issue of TOPIA seeks essays that
attempt to expand and deepen our understanding of
the fraught relationship between Bollywood,
global cinemas and the South Asian diaspora.
Existing scholarship on Bollywood presents it as
a complex terrain for the production of multiple
and intersecting narratives about homelands and
imagined communities of diaspora across
transnational sites. Because the escalating
global circulation and consumption of Bollywood
demands further thinking of this relationship,
both in terms of the contentions that mark the
framing of Bollywood in the diaspora as well as
the myriad possibilities it provides, this
special issue solicits papers on the following
(but not limited to) suggested topics that will
enable further conversations and dialogue.
Representing narratives of migrancy, home, relocation, and displacement"
Representing gender, class and caste, and
communal and nationalist politics " in South Asia, in the diaspora
Bollywood and diasporic aesthetics"
Industrial, aesthetic, capitalistic and political contexts for Bollywood film"
Audiences, communities, fans, cults: cultures of reception and consumption"
Melodrama, dance, music: traditions of performance"
Literary adaptations, Bollywood style"
Please submit all proposals and manuscripts to TOPIA editorial office
240 Vanier College, York University. Deadline: February 1, 2011
