Friday 22nd July 2010

CALL FOR PAPERS

From news coverage of swine flu and MMR to the worldwide success of popular fiction such as House and ER, dynamic relationships between the media and health pose significant questions around citizenship, personal and social narratives of well-being, the body, and public understandings of health and disease. This one-day interdisciplinary symposium encourages exploration of â??health and the mediaâ?? in terms of representation, journalistic news practices, audience and public engagements, and the role of emerging technologies.

We welcome papers presenting work-in-progress, published studies or preliminary research from scholars working in any related disciplines.

Suggested topics could include, but are not limited to:

? Representations of disease, dying and death
? The cultural politics of celebrity advocacy
? Public and health policy
? Representation and stigma (disability, mental health, etc.)
? New media and self diagnosis
? Metaphors of health
? Health communication (health promotion; social marketing)
? Medical (masculine) discourse and the media
? Makeover media and the body
? Trauma television
? Monstrous bodies
? Public understandings of illness and disease
? Representations of medical ethics

Abstracts should be sent by email attachment to (healthandthemedia /at/ gmail.com) by Friday 25th February 2011. Please include your name and contact details at the bottom of the abstract.
