Join fellow global public media scholars at this International
Communications Association preconference next May:
The Future of Public Media: Participatory Models, Global Networks
When/Where: Boston, Massachusetts, May 26, 2011
Format: Half-day preconference with invited speakers
Fee: $60
Topic: Around the world, nations are considering new PSB policies and
structures in response to both shifting market conditions, and the
rise of social and mobile platforms. These deliberations are opening
up opportunities for scholars to boldly re-examine basic assumptions
about relationships between journalism, citizenship, engagement and
the public square?in the process providing openings for
paradigm-shifting cross-cultural analysis. This
preconference?organized by researchers from American Universityââ??s
Center for Social Media (CSM) in consultation with organizers of the
biannual Re-Visionary Interpretations of the Public Enterprise (RIPE)
conference?is designed to both showcase original thinking about
participatory public media, and to expand upon a global network of
scholars and practitioners examining related questions. An afternoon
session preceding the International Communications Association
meeting, the event will feature short presentations from invited
speakers, who will discuss how their pioneering work on public media
in the networked age might inform policy and practice. Speakers include:
· Patricia Aufderheide of American University
· Sean Jacobs of the New School
· Graham Murdock of Loughborough University
· Vibodh Parthasarathi of the Centre for
Culture, Media & Governance, Jamia Millia Islamia
Organizers and speakers will then then participate in a larger group
discussion about opportunities for cross-cultural research focused on
participatory platforms and practices.
