XI Film Summer School
True as Fiction: Cinema between Narration and Representations of the Real

Locarno, 2-6 August 2010

(Applications deadline: 9 July, 2010)

Every year the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the Università della Svizzera italiana and the Locarno International Film Festival organise a Summer School to analyse fiction and non-fiction cinema. The Summer School is part of Réseau Cinéma CH, a Swiss university consortium promoting two Master of Arts programs in Film Studies and Filmmaking.

The XI Film Summer School will explore the cross-hybridization between contemporary fiction cinema and documentaries in dialogues with scholars and filmmakers. The scholars invited are professors Raffaele De Berti from the Università degli Studi di Milano andJenaro Talens from the Université de Genève. We are also pleased to announce that the renowned Argentinian director Lisandro Alonso will be among the directors guests at this year’s Summer School.

The aim of the XI Film Summer School is to reflect on the processes of cinematographic realism.  A "realistic effect" is not generated by a simple reproduction of the world, but rather from the presence of a series of textual strategies and cultural conditions that generate this "realistic effect". In fact, a film is not just a mirror which reflects what is in front of the camera but rather a text which illustrates and re-illustrates a universe and then exhibits this universe to an audience.  What is at stake are the "realistic effects", bound by what the film shows; the way it makes proposals to the audience and the way in which the audience accepts what is being proposed to it.

The Summer School offers the opportunity to 20 undergraduate and graduate students to explore the techniques of analysis and the processes of film creation and production through the following teaching activities:

Seminars
Four seminar-lectures, coordinated by prof. Giuseppe Richeri, will deal with the complexity of contemporary animation in creative and production terms.  Guest teachers will include scholars Raffaele De Berti (Università degli Studi di Milano) and Jenaro Talens(Université de Genève).

Workshops
The four modules - coordinated by dr. Nevina Satta - will consist of two workshops conducted by two renowned filmmakers, one of whom will be the famous Argentinian director Lisandro Alonso. Using analytical methods, the authors will present their own creative-production processes and the typical features of their relevant market. Laboratory work includes the viewing and the discussion of one or more films, each author’s presentation of his conception and production cycle in its main stages, and will conclude with a group discussion with the film director.
