The University of Sydney
Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies
London Summer School, July 2008
" Conflict-resolving Media, July 7-11
" Key Issues in Peace and Conflict Studies, July 21-25
with Associate Professor Jake Lynch and colleagues

Sydney Universitys Centre for Peace and Conflict
Studies is bringing two of its world-renowned courses
to London for the first time, hosted by the
School of Oriental and African Studies, part of London University.
Study Conflict-resolving Media with former BBC
reporter and presenter Jake Lynch, now the centres
Director, and SBS World News Australia reporter
Annabel McGoldrick. The two are leading authorities in the
emerging field of Peace Journalism, and authors
of the landmark text of the same name. For Key Issues in
Peace and Conflict Studies, Lynch is joined by
CPACS lecturer, Dr Wendy Lambourne.
The courses can studied as part of CPACS new
Distance Learning Masters program, or
cross-listed, by arrangement, for credit towards a Masters degree at other
universities. They are also available, at a
reduced cost, to audit, that is, benefit
from course content and readings without being assessed.

Master of Peace and Conflict Studies by distance learning
" Obtain a recognised postgraduate degree in this
exciting field of study, from one of the worlds top
universities, without having to uproot home, career and salary.
" Set the pace of study to fit in with other
commitments. A Masters degree can be obtained over a
maximum of four years.
" Course cost for registration in 2008 = AUD$19,680, payable in instalments.
" To audit one unit = AUD$1,192.50, or about 575 pounds sterling.

How it works
The Masters consists of eight units of study.
One, the core unit, Key Issues in Peace and Conflict Studies, is
compulsory and is offered every year as an
intensive short course, lasting five days. In even-numbered years,
starting 2008, that takes place in London; in
odd-numbered years, its in Sydney.
In each case, at least one other unit is offered,
again as a short course, so it is possible to make one trip to
London or Sydney for three weeks and gain two
course credits. In London, in July 2008, the other is
Conflict-resolving Media. The latter is taught by
Associate Professor Jake Lynch, Director of CPACS, and
TV reporter Annabel McGoldrick. The two are
leading authorities in the growing field of Peace Journalism.
Credits towards the rest of the Masters can be
obtained by visiting Sydney for three weeks in January to do
two courses in Summer School in 2009, Peace and
the Environment and Non-violence and Social Change
with the remainder made up from four online units, or two plus a Dissertation.

Online units
OR the Masters can be completed with ONE trip to
London OR Sydney and the rest through a Dissertation
plus four online units. There are five to choose
from, all taught by leading figures in their respective fields.
These start in mid-March (Semester 1) and early
September (Semester 2) each year. Peaceful Conflict
Transformation, with Professor Johan Galtung, a
founder of the subject, is offered in both.

In Semester 1 only:
" Human Right to Adequate Food with Professor
George Kent, University of Hawaii.
" Democratisation of the Developing World with
Professor Paul D Scott, Kansai Gaidai University.
In Semester 2 only:
" Human Rights, Peace and Justice with Associate Professor Jake Lynch.
" Peace and the Global Compact with Mr Fred
Dubee, an experienced business executive who is Chief
Officer of the Global Compact at UN HQ in New York.

Dissertation
Students can opt to research and write a
dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words, on a topic agreed
with their supervisor. Tutorials will be
conducted online and/or by telephone. The Dissertation is worth two
units, so students opting to do this will need to
complete six other units of study to obtain the Masters.

The University of Sydney
Sydney is one of the worlds top universities.
Ranked 5th in the world for Humanities by the Times Higher
Educational Supplement in 2006, its Peace and
Conflict Studies program has grown tenfold since 2001.
