Why Join Us:

The School is the product of recently combined faculties of journalism and mass communication and communication studies, and the reorganized faculty holds a collective sense of untapped potential and a drive for innovation.

The School has launched nearly a dozen new degree programs, microcredentials, certificates, and courses. The School faculty also boasts a strong sense of shared purpose in Kansas State’s land-grant mission as expressed in the university’s Next-Gen Land Grant strategic plan, including a passion for inclusion and access and offering exceptional education and research for its increasingly diverse student population. The School encourages public-facing and community-engaged scholarship and explicitly rewards it via tenure and promotion.

Two national centers housed in the School—the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media and the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy—promote interdisciplinary and publicly engaged scholarship that serve the needs of Kansas and the world. Additionally, the Journalism Education Association national headquarters is housed at the School on the Manhattan campus.

Through its endowed scholarships, the School awards more than $250,000 annually to attract and retain its growing student body. Experiential learning opportunities include nationally awarded, multi-platform student media (including the 91.9 KSDB-FM radio station, the KKSU television station, the Collegian daily newspaper, and the Royal Purple yearbook); a dynamic PRSSA chapter; and nationally competitive intercollegiate debate and forensics teams.

The School offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in advertising and public relations, communication studies, digital innovation in media, and news and sports media. It also offers master’s degrees in communication and an interdisciplinary doctoral program in leadership communication. The faculty has expertise in health and risk communications, rural communications networks, media law, political communication, data analytics, media economics, emerging media, media criticism, organizational communication, and more.
