The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of media and communication studies.

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (/Berliner Hochschulgesetz/).

Successful candidates must hold an outstanding doctoral degree and additional academic qualifications and achievements (as defined under Section 100.2 of the Berlin Higher Education Act) in the field of media and communication studies or a related social science. They should have a research focus on media effects in its full scope. Applicants should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: effects and societal structures, effects within the context of political communication, the theoretical and empirical development of effects concepts for digital spheres, emotions and effects, effects within the context of entertainment. They should also be able to demonstrate exceptional research work through international publications and have a background in acquiring and implementing externally funded research projects as well as experience with interdisciplinary projects and research settings. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a record of successful, international teaching in English at the university level. Furthermore, we are especially interested in applicants with experience in supervising and implementing knowledge transfer activities, as well as applicants with prior experience in leading (collaborative) research projects and/or degree programs.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

The new professor will participate and further develop the degree programs run by the Institute for Media and Communication Studies (BA and MA), especially the master’s degree program “Media and Political Communication.” They will be involved in contributing to and initiating future joint research projects within the institute and department (for example, the Weizenbaum Institute, Clusters of Excellence, CRCs, graduate schools). They will also be expected to help expand international joint research projects and to address gender and diversity issues in their research and teaching. The appointee should also be prepared to fill any gaps in their knowledge of German so that within a period of two years they have achieved at least C1-level (CEFR) proficiency.

Applications should include a CV, copies of all certificates of academic qualification in German or English (please enclose translations where necessary), a list of publications, a list of courses previously taught, and evidence of teaching aptitude. Please include information on involvement in ongoing and future research endeavors, joint research projects, and externally funded projects. If necessary, please include language certificates. If applicable, please give information on partnerships with industry, inventions/patents, and spin-offs.
