Ref no: ORU 2.1.1-05074/2022
We are looking for a professor of media and communication studies with a
specialisation in strategic communication for a permanent position at
the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.
Subject area
The subject area for this position is media and communication studies.
Background
The School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (HumES) offers
bachelor’s and master’s education within a wide range of subjects and
fields, in the form of both freestanding courses and study programmes.
In addition, the school is host to prominent research and doctoral study
programmes. Its activities are characterised by cross-disciplinary
cooperation and a desire to continuously develop both education and
research.
As a subject, media and communication studies is oriented towards social
science and humanities. It has extensive research activities and a
strong international profile. Currently, faculty consists of three
professors, one professor emeritus, thirteen senior lecturers (of which
five are docents), two researchers, three lecturers, and three doctoral
students.
On the research side, media and communication studies at Örebro
University has three profile areas: Discourse, Communication and Media;
Moving Images and Screen Cultures; and Strategic Communication. By
creating this position, the subject wishes to reinforce the profile area
of strategic communication, that is, professional communication aiming
to meet long-term and organisational goals (for example, risk
communication, crisis communication, public relations, the communication
and PR work of public institutions and authorities, and organisational
communication). For more information, see
https://www.oru.se/english/research/research-subjects/media-and-communication-studies/.
Two bachelor’s programmes are offered within the subject – the Media,
Communication and PR Programme and the Film Studies Programme. In
addition, our course range includes a number of freestanding national
and international courses. We also offer a one-year international
master’s programme in strategic communication.
Duties and responsibilities
As professor, you are expected to take a leading role within the
subject. You will spend most of your working hours on research
activities and doctoral education, but also on courses and study
programmes at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Your duties and
responsibilities also include working actively to bring in external
research grants to the subject, take overall responsibility for its
research activities, and contribute to developments within the subject
field nationally and internationally. As professor, you are expected to
communicate and collaborate around your own and the subject’s research
activities. Administrative duties are also included.
You are expected to make yourself available for management and
administrative assignments at the university. Through presence and
dedication you are expected to take special responsibility for
supporting a collegial and inclusive atmosphere within the organisation.
We expect the position holder to have a high degree of workplace
presence and to engage in various duties and responsibilities within the
subject.
Qualifications
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise is
qualified for employment as a professor.
The applicant is required to have completed qualifying courses on
teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent, corresponding
to ten weeks, as well as courses on supervising doctoral students.
Knowledge and skills equivalent to such courses may also be assessed to
establish whether these provide eligibility. This assessment will be
made by Örebro University. If either of these requirements are not met,
the successful applicant is expected to complete the requisite training
course(s) within two years of their appointment.
Assessment criteria
When appointing a professor, the degree of the expertise required within
research activities and teaching respectively is assessed. The
assessment criteria research expertise and teaching expertise both
encompass a consideration of collaborative and leadership skills. In
addition, the applicant’s suitability for the position is assessed,
meaning for instance that the applicant has the personal qualities
required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at
hand, the ability to cooperate, and the ability to contribute to the
development of the operations.
Research expertise
The applicant’s research expertise is demonstrated through their
independent research contributions. These are to significantly exceed
the qualifications required for appointment as a docent, in terms of
both quality and quantity. Scientific publications are to be at a high
continuous level and published in quality-assured channels of relevance
to the subject in question. Research expertise includes the ability to
obtain funding in competition, experience of serving in academic
positions of trust, and experience of doctoral supervision. In addition,
research expertise encompasses leadership and administrative skills,
notably the ability to initiate, organise and lead research projects or
research teams, as well as collaborative skills, notably the ability to
conduct research in collaboration with the wider community.
Applicants demonstrating a high degree of research expertise through
successful research within strategic communication is at a particular
advantage.
Teaching expertise
Teaching expertise is demonstrated through the ability to teach and
supervise at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, the ability
to draw on research in teaching, as well as the ability to develop
students’ self-learning and interest in the subject. Teaching expertise
also includes considerable ability to independently take responsibility
for planning, implementing, examining and evaluating courses and study
programmes, as well as the ability to contribute to and lead the
pedagogical development of teaching. In addition, leadership skills,
such as the ability to organise and coordinate study programmes or other
educational activities, as well as collaboration and public engagement
skills, such as the ability to develop and implement training courses
for outside the higher education sector, are also included.
Other assessment aspects
Having the ability to teach and perform administrative duties in both
Swedish and English is a requirement. If the successful candidate does
not possess such skills, they are expected to acquire them within two
years of taking up the position.
