Grade 7/8

Salary - £36,402 - £51,829

Closes – 23/01/22

The School of Communication and Media <https://www.ulster.ac.uk/faculties/arts-humanities-and-social-sciences/communication-and-media> is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Screen Production to teach into the BA Screen Production <https://www.ulster.ac.uk/courses/202223/screen-production-25295> course based on our Belfast Campus, to contribute to Research and Impact and to link with other Academic and Technical Support staff in the wider Ulster Screen Academy.

The role will focus on leading core introductory modules in the Screen Production curriculum (see prospectus for details <https://www.ulster.ac.uk/courses/202223/screen-production-25295#modules>), and developing modules at later stages on the program linked to the appointee’s specific areas of practical expertise and/or research in TV and Film Production as well as supervising practice projects and practice oriented research projects. A strong subject pedagogy and focus on pastoral work to introduce undergraduate students to the discipline is desirable. The appointment will be supported by a strong technical team, with media industry backgrounds, to help students develop their creativity, and understand the productive links between media theory and production. As an institution committed to widening access to education, we are heavily committed to work that embraces a wide range of student backgrounds. The school and institution are committed to the development of student centred, active and applied pedagogies to develop students’ academic, technical and professional attributes.

The Screen Production course is part of the Ulster Screen Academy <https://www.ulster.ac.uk/screen-academy> which has been established to develop productive links between the School of Communication and Media, the School of Arts and Humanities and Belfast School of Art; linking curricula and research across a broad range of screen based subjects such as Animation, Film, TV Production, Games Design, Interaction Design, Immersive and Interactive Media.

Screen Production is a new, industry facing flagship course, now in it’s third year, situated on the vibrant new £370m Belfast Campus <https://www.ulster.ac.uk/campuses/gbd>. The course is built on a long heritage of expertise in Media Studies research and scholarship for over 30 years at Ulster University, and has just expanded into exciting areas in VFX and Virtual Production with a £1.2m HERC investment in motion capture and an in-camera visual effects virtual production studio. The successful candidate will work alongside colleagues across Ulster as part of the university’s £72m Studio Ulster project <https://www.brcd-innovation.co.uk/projects/smil>, one of the pillar innovation projects for the Belfast Region City Deal. Studio Ulster brings world class facilities and research environment for new and emerging techniques and technologies in the screen industries.

The School of Communication and Media has a long and distinguished history as a centre for media research. We are keen to recruit internationally excellent scholars, returnable to REF in the subject area, broadly construed. We are also committed to the Research/Teaching Nexus and the important links between staff’s Research and the curriculum design. The school has a commitment to at least a 20% research time allocation for all research active staff who are developing research outputs, engaging in impact activity and working on activities which contribute to the REF portfolio.
