Professor of Race and Media
Are you a leading scholar of race and media? Are you interested in
developing the area in a top department of media and communication? Are
you an experienced academic leader looking to support the growth of
early career researchers?
The School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds is a
highly ranked department with a commitment to excellence in both
research and teaching. We are ranked in 2nd in the UK for Communication
and Media Studies (Complete University Guide 2021) and 32nd in the world
for Communication and Media Studies (QS World University Rankings by
Subject 2021). In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework we ranked in
the top ten departments in the UK with 82% of our research judged to be
either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
In recent years, the School has demonstrated increased research and
teaching expertise in social inequalities and social justice, and we aim
to build on these strengths through significant investment into the area
of race and media. To support continuing growth of the area, the
appointed Professor of Race and Media will lead the subsequent
recruitment of two lecturers in race and media. The successful candidate
will be expected to enhance the School’s research and teaching
activities and work with colleagues to develop our international profile
and standing. Applications are welcome from candidates whose research
explores race and media in any setting (Global North or Global South);
in relation to any form of media or communication; and with relevance to
any of our research strengths in media industries and cultural
production, journalism, political communication, global communication,
visual media and communication, digital cultures, and gender and media.
Our commitment to inclusion
As an international research-intensive university with a strong
commitment to student education, we aim to create an inclusive
environment that attracts, supports and retains the best students and
staff from all backgrounds and from across the world.
In line with this vision, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures
is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality
of opportunity. We select candidates on the basis of merit and ability
and aspire to further diversify our Faculty community. We particularly
welcome and encourage applications from candidates belonging to groups
that have been under-represented in the University including, but not
limited to: Black, Asian and ethnically diverse people; people who
identify as LGBT+; and people with disabilities.
