The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the leading

The Department of Communication and Media offers high quality
international research and education in media and communication studies,
media history, journalism and rhetoric. Staff and students work within
subjects from Social Sciences and Humanities. There is a lively research
culture, with established doctoral programmes, visiting researchers,
regular international seminar series, conferences and events. When it
comes to media and communication studies, the research and people are
ranked in the Top 100 Communication and Media departments (QS World
University Rankings by subject 2020). Media and communication studies at
Lund delivers postgraduate education and PhD training to a high standard
of international excellence, including our MSc in Media and Communication.
Media and communication studies at Lund University engages in world
class research in media, culture and democracy. We produce original
research that offers new and powerful ways of understanding knowledge,
people, and power in national and transnational media environments.
Media and communication studies research is organised in four
intersecting themes: media engagement, democracy and cultural
citizenship; media industries and creativity; gender, health and
society; audiences, popular culture and everyday life. We invite
applicants to contribute to our vision of media engagement in culture
and democracy.
Job assignment:
The holder of a doctoral position has as primary obligation to
successfully fulfill the third cycle education ending with a PhD degree.
Regulations concerning appointment as a full time doctoral student can
be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§. The holder
of the position should conduct research relevant to the research
strategy above
The holder of a doctoral position is expected to participate actively in
the research and teaching environment of the Department and may have to
perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20
per cent of full time.
Eligibility/Entry requirements:
To be eligible for third cycle studies an applicant must have:
Been awarded a second cycle degree or completed studies the equivalent
of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits
are at the second cycle level, or acquired comparable qualifications in
some other way in Sweden or abroad. In addition to the general admission
requirements for third-cycle education, the research student is to have
satisfied the requirements for courses comprising 30 second-cycle
credits in media and communication studies, or a corresponding
qualification acquired in Sweden or abroad. The third-cycle student is
also to have completed second-cycle independent projects worth 15
credits. Doctoral thesis proposals need to address the strategic
research areas of media and communication studies at Lund University.
The assessment will be based on national guidelines. The employment of
doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80.
Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD studies may be appointed
to doctoral candidate positions. When an appointment to such a position
is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD studies shall
primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to
their studies, those appointed to doctoral positions may be required to
work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance
with specific regulations in the ordinance.
Basis of assessment:
In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, paragraph
5, particular emphasis for admission shall be placed upon the
applicant’s ability to successfully complete PhD studies, as indicated
by academic qualifications and merits. The research plan and its
relation to the research strategy as well as previously written theses
and publications are important indicators of ability. Also English
language proficiency at an advanced level will be emphasized in the
assessment.

-Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in the disciplines of Media,
Communication and Cultural Studies
-A concise research plan that clearly addresses the contribution of the
applicant to the research strategy at media and communication studies in
Lund University (maximum 3000 words)
-Other qualifications of relevance for the position.
-Name and contact information of two personal references
