The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society
(ADM+S Centre) is offering the following interdisciplinary employment
and PhD opportunities at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Law
School, Australia.
The ADM+S Centre is a new, cross-disciplinary, national research centre,
which aims to aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for
responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. The
Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, media
studies, law, social and technological sciences in an international
research, industry and civil society network. Its research is structured
into four programs—Institutions, Data, People and Technology—and four
priority domains for public engagement—news and media, transport, social

RESEARCH FELLOWS
Three postdoctoral Research Fellows are sought to work on these projects:
• Automated Decision-Making, Democracy and Law (2 year
fixed-term contract, 100% FTE). The project examines possibilities for
democratic practice and governance given automated decision-making and
focuses on challenges to democratic institutions. The project seeks to
add civic questions to consideration of the regulation of automated
decision-making.
• Ecological Regulation of Automated Decision-Making (2 year
fixed-term contract, 100% FTE). The project examines possibilities for
regulating the broader ‘ecological’ impacts of the shift towards
data-driven optimisation systems. These impacts include harmful effects
on the conditions necessary to sustain and nurture the broader yet often
overlooked social and ecological commons upon which flourishing human
societies depend.
• Data Civics, Rights and Ownership for Automated
Decision-Making (2 year fixed term contract, 60% FTE). The project
examines a range of questions connected to data, its generation, use and
regulation, including mapping approaches to automated decision-making;
examining automated data collection in pandemic contexts; and analysing
automated decision-making with a focus on civic commitments and concerns.
The three projects will involve individual and collaborative work by the
Fellows and ADM+S Centre Investigators and the Fellows will collaborate
actively with the ADM+S Centre’s national and international network of
participants. The Fellows will also have access to the ADM+S Centre’s
research training and professional development opportunities,
international visiting fellowships and exchanges (travel arrangements
