Description

The Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor with a focus on race and cinema, television, or media in the United States, in any of the following specializations, including but not restricted to, African-American, Latinx, Native American, or Asian-Pacific-American cinema and media. We also welcome scholars working comparatively across these specializations, as well as those who combine the study of U.S race and media with transnational or intersectional approaches. The start date of this position is September 16, 2021.

The teaching load comprises four courses a year, and tenure-track faculty have an annual service period of 9 months (September 16 – June 15).

The University of Washington is a large, urban, public, R1 institution located at the heart of Seattle. We seek candidates who can work effectively with diverse student and community populations, as well as those excited to join us in innovating the curriculum for our fast-growing BA, MA, and PhD programs. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to teach at every level, from the introductory undergraduate lecture auditorium to advanced graduate seminars. The Department of Cinema and Media Studies encourages public-facing scholarship, and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to forge further connections to campus units, and to Seattle’s many vibrant cultural institutions catering to under-represented minority communities.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in cinema or media studies or in a related field (such as Communications, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Literary Studies, or Visual Studies), and demonstrate facility in historical, theoretical, and humanistic approaches.
