[Commlist] Funded PhD Position in Media and Communications in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne commencing 2021

Expressions of Interest are invited for a PhD scholarship associated
with the Australian Research Council Discovery Project ‘*Digital
photography: mediation, memory and visual communication’* led by
Professor Scott McQuire at the University of Melbourne. This is an
opportunity to work closely with a senior team of researchers including
Professor McQuire, Professor Nikos Papastergiadis and Professor Sean
Cubitt (University of Melbourne), Professor Daniel Palmer (RMIT) and
Professor Celia Lury (Warwick). The position is full time and the
successful applicant will pursue an independent PhD research project
aligned with the larger ARC project under the supervision of *Professor
McQuire.*
We are seeking a highly motivated student with demonstrable research
skills and academic experience to undertake a project on the topic of
‘Networked Digital Photography and Memory’. This is conceived as a
discrete project focusing on material-semiotic analysis of a corpus of
digital photographs gathered from research participants in the course of
the project. The student will be expected to contribute to fieldwork
research into everyday photographic practices, and will receive training
in participant observation, interview and photo-elicitation to assist
the project’s investigation of the ways in which digital photographs
support new modes of mediated communication, social encounter and
remembrance.
Applications are sought from those with relevant academic qualifications
and expertise in one or more of the following fields: photographic
theory, media and communications, visual culture, visual ethnography,
cultural studies.
The scholarship offers 100% fee offset and a living allowance of $31,200
per year pro rate (2020 full time study date) for to 3.5 years.
Applicant for this scholarship must meet the entry Requirements for the

their qualifying degree. Meeting the University's English language
