[Commlist] PhD Opportunity in Information and Communication : Artificial Intelligence and Communication
Thu Oct 15 09:55:01 GMT 2020
*PhD Opportunity in Information and Communication Science*
We are looking for exceptional candidates for a PhD scholarship who are
keen on exploring several research questions about *communication and
learning issues in the artificial intelligence age.*
The candidate will be hosted by ELLIADD Lab, University of
Franche-Comté, France.
Several IA tools show advances in the wide field of human communication
: for instance, the Associated Press exploits AI-enabled solutions in
the production and distribution of news (Marconi et al., 2017),
news-writing programs create narratives from data that cannot be easily
distinguished from human produced stories (Clerwall, 2014; Graefe et
al., 2018), Springer edited the first AI-written book (2019,
/Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Machine-Generated Summary of Current
Research/), human beings can ask digital assistants like Amazon’s
Alexato solve doubts or fill some knowledge gaps in (Pew Research
Center, 2017; Guzman, 2018; Jones, 2014;) or ask Google human voice
AI-agent to complete administrative tasks (Statt, 2018).
In the field of the communication research, these AI-technologies pose
theoretical and methodological challenges. In fact, AI-devices and
programs let users interact dynamically, according on the messages
exchanged within a particular moment and context or upon the data being
fed into the program. Moreover, people perceive humanized interfaces and
robots as social partners distinct from humans but as social nonetheless
(e.g. Edwards et al., 2016), and AI-devices can learn about their human
communication partner and adjusting interactions accordingly.
AI-devices act as communicative tools and people perceive them as social
actors.
For these reasons, research should think differently the design and the
evaluation of human-machine communication settings under the light of
AI-technologies possibilities and limits.
*Skills of the candidate*
To deal with these issues, the candidate should have a background in
interaction design or communication science, computer science (machine
and deep learning), psychology and human computer interaction or related
areas. Knowledge and skills in computer science will very useful to
develop a POC (Proof of Concept) to be tested.
The PhD application process is quite competitive, so we are looking for
high motivated and capable students from any country.
