*Research Associate (57 mos) -**Digital Campaigning and Electoral
Democracy (DiCED)*
DiCED is a major new European Research Council funded comparative
project that will study the drivers and effects of digital campaigning
in 5 countries and 7 national elections during the period 2020-2024. It
will use an exciting mix of established and innovative social and data
science methods to investigate questions about the growth of
‘data-driven’ campaigning (DDC) within new and established democracies.
Specifically, it will look at whether digital technologies and data are
fundamentally changing how campaigns are run, who runs them, and their
effects are on voters, parties and democratic systems more generally.
DiCED is led by Professor Rachel Gibson at the University of Manchester
and will be delivered by a team of country and methodological experts
from the UK, Germany, France, Poland and the U.S. We are looking for an
enthusiastic and talented Research Associate with a PhD (or close to
completion) in a relevant area with strong research skills to contribute
to the conceptual and methodological development of the project. The RA
will work with team members to design and conduct the fieldwork and play
a key role in the data collection, curation, archiving and analysis
phases of the project. The RA be involved in the co-production of
research outputs from the project, and presentation of findings at
national and international conferences, workshops, meetings and public
engagements. Duration 57 months, tenable from February 1^st .

*Research Associate (6mos) - Democracy@Risk Project*
Democracy@Risk examines the key threats that Digital Technologies pose
to Democracy, and particularly free and fair elections. It is funded by
the University of Manchester Research Institute. The focus of the
project is on identifying, measuring and responding to the new threats
(and opportunities) that digital technologies and AI pose to the
functioning of democratic institutions and the deeper cultural norms of
trust that underpin them. We are looking for an enthusiastic and
talented Research Associate with a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area,
with strong research skills, and experience of preparing literature
reviews and syntheses of evidence.
Core responsibilities will include:
·Finding, reviewing, and synthesising existing research relevant to
potential threats to democracy, including in the academic and grey
literature;
·Contributing to workshops with UK and international researchers and
policy makers, by identifying core themes and potential participants,
participating in the meetings, and writing up findings;
·Co-writing a journal article and policy oriented report with the PI’s
based on the literature synthesis and workshop outputs;
·Helping PIs in research roadmapping exercise and helping to identify
sources of funding to implement the roadmap outcomes.
