*ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN FASHION STUDIES, FASHION CULTURES & FASHION
COMMUNICATION *
The American University of Parisinvites applications for a
teacher-researcher Assistant Professor position specializing in Fashion
Studies, Fashion Cultures & Fashion Communication housed within the
Department of Global Communications.
Candidates should have cross-cultural expertise and academic training in
Fashion Studies or Fashion**Communications and Cultures*. *In addition
to excellent scholarship, ideal candidates would have fashion industry
experience and contacts. Complementary disciplinary expertise or
industry experience in any of the following areas are of particular
interest: sociology, cultural studies, material culture, digital media,
emerging technologies, visual culture, sustainability, journalism,
branding, advertising, PR.
*QUALIFICATIONS:*Ph.D. in Communications, Media studies, or a related
discipline, with a strong emphasis on Fashion by time of appointment
(August 1, 2020, pending final budgetary approval). Proven capacity for
excellent, engaged teaching committed to student learning within a
liberal arts context. Solid academic training in fashion, communication,
media studies, or visual culture methods and theories. Strong record in
curriculum development. Familiarity with liberal arts education,
learning objectives, skill development (critical thinking, information
literacy, writing in the disciplines, etc.) and assessment is highly
desirable. Strong research and publication potential in Fashion Studies.
Capacity to work in a multi-cultural environment a strong plus. Ability
to speak French is recommended but not required.
European Union citizenship or legal right to work in France, while
helpful, is not necessary at the time of application.

*THE INSTITUTION:* Founded in 1962, The American University of Paris
(AUP) is a small, undergraduate and Masters degree-granting institution
with a Liberal Arts core, dedicated to the advancement of the Arts &
Sciences in an international and multicultural environment. AUP brings
together the values of the American higher education system with its

*THE DEPARTMENT:* Dedicated to the international and comparative study
of communications, media and culture, the department houses two
undergraduate majors, one in Global Communications and one in
Journalism, an undergraduate minor in Cultural Anthropology and one in
Political Communications and a dynamic MA program in Global
Communications offering additional MA tracks in: Fashion; Development
Communications; and Digital Cultures and Industries. The department has
12 full-time faculty, 6 part-time faculty, 140 undergraduate majors and
80 graduate students.

*RESPONSABILITIES :*
-The full-time teaching load consists of six courses per year. We will
entertain applications from individuals interested in a half-time position.
-Teaching responsibilities will primarily be focused in the department’s
Fashion Studies curriculum.
-The development of an undergraduate fashion program will be an
immediate responsibility.
-Teaching in other areas of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum
may be possible, including: visual culture, material culture, global
digital media, transnational flows of identity and cultural value,
critical cultural studies in branding, museums, and journalism.
-Professional mentorship is an important component of our work with
students.
-Commitment to scholarship, excellence in teaching, integrative learning
-Service to the department (contributing to curricular development and
innovation, advising students)
-Willingness to provide service to the university (participation in
committee work, assessment, interdisciplinary collaboration)
-Participating in faculty governance, including attending full faculty,
department, and committee meetings
-Working in a professional and collegial manner with the university
community
-Maintaining compliance with policies and procedures in the Faculty Manual
Faculty at AUP must have a commitment to liberal arts education in a
highly international environment and pursue international research and
scholarship. We seek engaged teacher-scholars and have high expectations
of teaching and scholarly research for promotion. AUP follows an
American model of academic promotion (Assistant, Associate, Professor).
