The PostDoc-position is located at the Journalism Studies division of
the Institute for Media and Communication Studies. It is part of the
interdisciplinary research collaboration „Affective Societies“ funded by
the German Research Foundation which analyzes the fundamental importance
of emotionality and affectivity for social life in the mobile,
networked, and mediatized worlds of the 21st century. The communication
studies project investigates how journalism creates an order of emotions
in public discourses on the subject of migration. It focuses on the
extent to which a change in publicly visible and evoked emotions in
audio-visual journalistic media texts can be traced over time. In
connection with this, the project answers the question of how journalism
as an institution is challenged by affective dynamics of public
articulations of para-journalistic actors (such as YouTube-Stars) and
user comments.
*Job description:*
The focus of the field of activity lies in fundamental theoretical work
on the transfer of emotion-sociological concepts to journalism, on the
transformation of journalism as an institution and on the development of
parajournalistic practices - together with the other members of the
subproject B02. Empirically, the focus is on the analysis of audiovisual
journalistic contributions over time. The work requires a willingness to
work with interdisciplinary theory and methods. The post-doctoral
researcher will be responsible to work on international scientific
publications, the organization of workshops and an international
conference. In addition, the position holder supports the preparation of
research results within the framework of the public relations module
with external partners, in order to reach public at large.
*Requirements:*
A doctor of philosophy degree (or equivalent) in communication studies
or a related discipline.
*Desirable:*
* Expertise in qualitative methods of journalism studies, especially
analysis of audiovisual media formats
* Experience with the administration and organization of scientific
projects, workshops and conferences
* Interest in one or more of the following fields of research:
journalism, para-journalistic formats, theory of affect and emotion
* Very good language skills in German and English
* Knowledge of the dissemination of scientific results for scientific
and non-scientific audiences

form of interaction with journalistic and parajournalistic
communicators. This is realized by means of qualitative
(discourse-analysis) and quantitative digital data analysis. The job
holder is responsible for establishing criteria for research and the
qualitative evaluation of journalistic and parajournalistic
contributions. Furthermore, the person is involved in the preparation
and implementation of the digital data analysis of user interactions via
social media as well as the quantitative-descriptive and
qualitative-interpretative evaluation of the data. The work on the
project entails the opportunity to earn a PhD degree at the Freie
Universität Berlin.
*Requirements:*
A unversity degree (M.A. or equivalent) in communication studies or a
related social science discipline.
*Desirable*:
* Expertise in the field of journalism studies and social media research
* Experiences in the independent application of qualitative and
quantitative methods of digital data analysis, in particular,
analysis of user-comments on social media
* Knowledge in the area of sociological research on emotion and affect
studies
Very good language skills in German and English
