[Commlist] Mellon Funded Research Scientist Position at Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech’s Digital Integrative Liberal Arts Center (DILAC), with 
major funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, seeks a research 
scientist for design, development, and project management in the 
context of our diverse scholarly, pedagogical, expressive, and 
public-facing digital projects. We are particularly looking for 
expertise with digital archives encompassing text, audio, and video with 
attention to the cultural, ethical, and political dimensions of the 
creation and use of archives. Related areas of interest are information 
visualization, interactive narrative, and civic media. This is 
a full-time, fixed-term position for the life of the grant which ends in 
June 2022.

This role requires the ability to think critically about 
both humanistic and design questions in order to conceptualize and 
create artifacts that serve specific purposes for research and/or 
teaching while also advancing the field of humanistic digital design. 
The candidate should be able to work effectively in 
multiple interdisciplinary project teams of faculty, graduate students, 
and undergraduate students, as leader or group member, and to 
collaborate with community and institutional partners. Because existing 
tools often lack affordances that best serve the goals of scholarship 
and teaching in the Liberal Arts, the candidate should be capable of 
designing and leading the development of digital tools that build on 
off-the-shelf open software to better support humanistic inquiry and 
knowledge creation.

The position carries the expectation of teaching one course in a related 
area in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Applicants should hold a graduate degree in a relevant field such as 
Digital Media, Digital Humanities, or Information and Library 
Sciences and have experience with digital projects in a university 
setting. Hands-on experience with archival software such as Omeka 
Classic and Omeka Classic plug-ins, web technologies (JavaScript, CSS, 
HTML, php, SQL), and data visualization software such as R, python, or 
d3.js is highly valued. Strong communication skills are also important. 
A criminal background check must be completed prior to employment.

The Digital Integrative Liberal Arts Center (DILAC) is a research center 
within Georgia Tech’s multi-disciplinary School of Literature, Media, 
and Communication. DILAC promotes new forms of humanistic inquiry
