    Job Specification...

The Department of Communication Studies explores a wide range of forms of human communication from a variety of perspectives that connect the local and the global and are rooted in African contexts and experiences. Our curriculum uses an innovative approach that addresses the specific communicative, cultural and social contexts. As an inherently transdisciplinary discipline, Communication Studies intersects a multiplicity of fields and areas in the humanities and social sciences and offers an opportunity to explore their complementarity and interconnectedness. Students enrolling in our degrees investigate issues to do with oral, written, visual and other forms of communication, as well as with different media and communication contexts and forms. The Department of Communication Studies aims to develop and expand students’ intellectual capabilities, social capacities and practical skills to investigate, interpret, discuss, problematize and creatively as well as cooperatively engage with communicative practices.

*Responsibilities: *

  * Teaching at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  * Supervising Honours, Masters and Doctoral students
  * Undertaking curriculum development with the emphasis on being
    locally relevant
  * Quality assurance related to teaching and learning
  * Course coordination and course administration
  * Academic administration
  * Curriculum and content development and planning
  * Postgraduate supervision and recruitment: Honours, Masters, Doctoral
    and Post-Doctoral students
  * Quality assurance related to teaching and learning
  * Research - publish in reviewed and accredited publications, and
    departmental research initiatives;
  * Contribute to the enhancement of the national and international
    profile of the department
  * Intercampus lecturing
  * Community engagement.

Minimum Requirements...

  * Doctorate in Communication Studies or close cognate discipline
  * Teaching and research record that match the level of appointment
  * Ability to teach large classes of students with diverse capabilities
    and intellectual interests
  * Curriculum development as commensurate with the level of appointment
  * A solid track record of postgraduate supervision at Masters and
    Doctoral level
* Solid knowledge of the theory of communication studies and media studies
  * Preference is given to applicants well versed in new media, and/or
    the philosophy of communication, and/or newer developments in the
    discipline such as big data analysis/communication and the fourth
    industrial revolution

*Recommendations:*

  * Knowledge, ability and willingness to teach in related communication
    disciplines.
  * Knowledge and interest in philosophies and practices related to the
    participatory turn and ethnographic turn
  * Expertise in writing and content development across multiple
    platforms and new media
  * Ability and interest in collaborative teaching and research
  * Experience in managing operational and research funds
  * Experience in staff management
