Lecturer in Communication Studies

Applications are invited for a position in the new School of Film and TV Arts, Division of Communication Studies, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou.

The successful applicant will have a PhD, and be able to demonstrate appropriate professional experience. Applicants should have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Applicants are expected to be able to teach in English, the language of instruction at the university. The successful appointee will be expected to teach; to undertake research in the area of communication studies; and to participate in the administration and development of the Division and the School of Film and TV Arts.

The School runs programmes in Communication Studies, Digital Media Arts, Film and TV Production and Filmmaking. Established in 2016 the School is new and growing rapidly.

The School seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Communication Studies with teaching to start in September 2018. The successful candidate will coordinate and deliver modules across a range of communication studies subject areas related to their expertise.

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The University now has 9,000 students studying on campus. The language of instruction is English. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and the SIP has a higher GDP per capita than the UK. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there is a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.

The salary range for the Lecturer positions (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the US system) is 26,454 – 32,412 RMB/month. In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.

    Project Description


    Requirements:

The candidate should have a first class or upper second class honours degree, or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification), in Law/Sociology/Media and Communication/Digital Data Studies/Applied Ethics, Evidence of good spoken and written Chinese and English is essential. The candidate should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, if the first language is not English. This position is open to all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality.


    Degree:

The student will be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool (UK) upon successful completion of the program.


    Project Description:

This project investigates big data ethics in China’s social media sectors. It examines the normative ethics of big data collection and process; it then studies the empirical norms and values of big data ethics practiced in China’s social media sectors; it addresses the conceptual disjunctions between empirical and normative norms and proposes for improvements including both legal and non-legal, hard and soft measures for big data ethics in China’s social media sector. Social science research methods will be applied include: a) Documentary research; b) in-depth interviews; and c) focus groups.

    Funding Notes

The PhD studentship is available for three years subject to satisfactory progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years (currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly stipend of 3500 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during the period of the award. It is a condition of the award that holders of XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to three months, if this is required by the project.

Applications are invited for a position in the new JC-School of Film and TV Arts, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou.

The JC-School of Film and Television Arts was built on the departmental strengths in communication and culture. With the addition of a film school and training in practical filmmaking and the creative arts, the School is developing a mix of practice, analysis, research, creativity and industry engagement with the film, television and creative industry sectors in China and internationally.

The School seeks to appoint an Associate Professor, Head of Division in Communication Studies.

The position of Associate Professor will have strategic and budgetary responsibilities to develop and manage the inner-school division of Communication Studies. Working with the Dean of School and senior lecturing staff the position holder will consult both externally and internally to modify existing programmes and modules in line with the School’s strategic plan. The post holder will also be responsible for senior administration responsibilities and membership of university committees.

As an Associate Professor the successful candidate will also have teaching and moderation duties, and planning responsibilities for revenue earning and partnership activities as agreed by the Dean of School in line with University policy and initiatives.

The successful candidate should have relevant expertise in at least two of the following areas: (i) contemporary media theories, (ii) public relations and advertising, (iii) media management, and (iv) empirical research methods. Familiarity with Chinese culture is an advantage. The School seeks a scholar who has a strong publication record in communication studies.

The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in communication or a relevant field (e.g. media or cultural studies, social sciences).
