[ecrea] PhD Scholarship on "Literary and Social Representations of Intimate Violence in Contemporary Scotland"
Wed Jan 10 21:58:38 GMT 2018
The School of English and the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at
the University of St Andrews are pleased to announce this fully-funded
PhD on "Literary and Social Representations of Intimate Violence in
Contemporary Scotland". Interested candidates with a strong track-record
in English and Psychology are invited to apply.
This interdisciplinary doctoral research project will examine the
relationship between beliefs of men and women living in Scotland about
men’s intimate violence towards women, and the cultural representations
of such violence in contemporary Scottish literature.
The literary aspect of the project will look at contemporary Scottish
fiction and drama, written by men and women, and examine the ways in
which these texts depict men’s violence against women. This could
include novels and short stories by authors such as Iain Banks, Janice
Galloway, James Kelman, AL Kennedy, Duncan Mclean and Irvine Welsh, and
drama by Gregory Burke, David Greig, Zinnie Harris, David Harrower, Gary
McNair, Rona Munro, and Steph Smith. (This list is not exhaustive and we
fully expect it to change as the project develops.) The student will
critically examine these texts in order to identify lines of power in
domestic violence, and how it is represented in culture.
The student will also gather narratives through semi-structured
interviews with participants (any gender, living in Scotland) who have
experienced conflict in intimate relationships. The interviews will
cover the experiences of aggression and, crucially, how aggression is
construed with regard to control motivation. Interviews will be
transcribed and subject to Thematic Analysis following procedures used
elsewhere in the psychological literature on aggression, as well as
being coded for aggression type using established criteria. The
interviews will also be compared with the literary texts.
The project will be supervised by Dr Anindya Raychaudhuri, a Lecturer in
the School of English who specialises in cultural representation and
collective memory of war and conflict; and Dr Kate Cross, a Lecturer in
the School of Psychology & Neuroscience who specialises in sex/gender
differences in risky and aggressive behaviour.
