Ryerson University’s School of Creative Industries invites applications for a tenure track full time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2018. The deadline for completed applications is January 8, 2018. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.

Unique among North American universities, Ryerson’s Creative Industries program studies the creative fields from the perspective of enterprise development, creative innovation and entrepreneurship to prepare students for today’s creative economy. The School provides teaching and research expertise to the Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD) and Ryerson University and is the home for FCAD interdisciplinary courses. FCAD focuses on programs in communication, media and the performing arts and works closely with professional groups in Toronto, Canada’s cultural and business center. We are looking for viable candidates who will embrace, with enthusiasm, the opportunity to work in a dynamic interdisciplinary teaching and learning environment. We seek an ambitious, emergent scholar and teacher who is deeply invested in the discipline of creative industries, its application to industry, public, and not-for-profit sectors, and the development of the next generation of creative leaders.

Candidates possessing a PhD in a relevant field completed by July, 2018 are preferred. Candidates with a relevant terminal degree (e.g. LLB/JD, MBA, MFA in a creative industry) with a record of impactful peer-reviewed dissemination will be considered. A track record of professional practice and/or experience in the creative industries will be an asset. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a dynamic, productive agenda in scholarly, research and creative work which complements the department’s current strengths.

Applicants may be drawn from such diverse fields as media, business/ management, law, communication, creative industries, economic geography, sociology, marketing/PR/strategic communication. Regardless of discipline, we are looking for applicants with dynamic, productive, critical and applied research programs grounded in the study of one or more creative industries including: music, fashion, journalism, advertising, digital & traditional media and others, who are interested in themes and trends that cross cut the creative industries such as the social and political impacts of creative industries, leadership, design, globalization, entrepreneurship and investment, governance and regulation, work and labour, the impacts of technological change, and so on.

The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality teaching and have the capacity to bring an interdisciplinary approach to the classroom. Candidates should speak to what insights they would bring to one or two of our required mass lecture courses, a Creative Industry core elective and towards developing courses in their own area of specialty. Candidates will have the opportunity to teach at the graduate level and supervise masters and PhD theses in various programs at the University where appropriate. Our faculty are also expected to provide spirited, collegial service to the School, FCAD and the University. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to upholding the values of equity, diversity and inclusion as they pertain to teaching and service and scholarly, research or creative activities.
