The Department of Philosophy at the University of Central Florida (UCF) seeks to hire an Assistant Professor of Humanities and Cultural Studies. This is a 9-month, tenure-earning position carrying a 3/2 undergraduate teaching load pre-tenure and research expectations commensurate with earning tenure at a research university. The position begins August 2018.


The successful candidate must have a PhD in a field relevant to Humanities and Cultural Studies from an accredited institution by time of application and at least 1 year full-time university/college-level teaching experience or its equivalent. We are open to candidates with diverse disciplinary training and teaching experience. However, the successful candidate will have one or more of the following as an area of teaching competence: critical theory, critical race theory, digital humanities, gender theory, performance theory, postcolonial theory, queer theory.


Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated record of teaching excellence; a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinarity; and an active research agenda. Successful experience teaching large classes and/or teaching online is a plus, as is the ability to contribute to department efforts recruit and retain students, to serve under-represented populations, to build relationships with other programs and units on and off campus, and/or to seek grant funding. We are especially interested in candidates with teaching and research expertise in one or more of the following: Black Studies, Caribbean Studies, Latin American Studies, Migration/Diaspora Studies, Borderlands, Hemispheric Studies, Transnationalism and Globalization.


The University of Central Florida, located in metropolitan Orlando, is an emerging preeminent research university. It serves 66,000 students, many of whom are first generation college students and/or ethnic minority students, and will soon be designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). One of four academic programs in the Department of Philosophy, the Humanities and Cultural Studies program serves a majority female and increasingly majority student of color population, almost one-third of whom identify as Hispanic or Latinx.
