Fri Feb 10 22:53:20 GMT 2017

**Job: Research Fellow: Critical Making*
Digital Cultures Research Centre, UWE Bristol <http://www.uwe.ac.uk/>*

/(Two-year Fixed Term Full Time post)/

*£32,004 to £38,183*

Ref: 1621815

The Digital Cultures Research Centre <http://dcrc.org.uk> (DCRC) at UWE Bristol seeks a Research Fellow who will develop, disseminate and promote the centre's research and knowledge exchange in Critical Making - understood in its broadest sense as an engagement with issues of power and authority through practices that involve a combination of critical thinking and hands-on making.

First developed by Matt Ratto in 2008, the concept of Critical Making has been further explored by researchers including Garnet Hertz and Stephen Hokema. Hertz sees critical making as, “encouraging the builders of technology – whether hackers, engineers, industrial designers, or technology-oriented artists – to step back and re-evaluate the assumptions and values being embedded in their technological designs”. Applicants for this new role may have a research interest in areas ranging from robotics to free software, design fiction to tinkering, “maktivism” to game jams.

You will work closely with the DCRC professors and the centre director to explore and develop practices of critical making in the context of emerging creative technologies. Engaging with the diverse community of artists, creative companies, technologists and researchers who are residents in DCRC’s home – the Pervasive Media Studio <http://www.watershed.co.uk/studio/> – and with DCRC’s wider inter-disciplinary network, you will translate advances in the subject area into research activity, developing and undertaking individual and collaborative research into the processes and methodologies of critical making. The role will involve developing and supporting new research initiatives and grant proposals to a variety of external funding bodies, delivering high quality peer-reviewed research outputs and contributing to the preparation of outstanding REF impact case studies.

As a key member of the research centre website editorial team, your responsibilities will include co-ordinating and delivering relevant content, and curating the associated social media channels, developing their potential for profile, research and knowledge exchange.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and focused researcher to develop research in this emerging field as part of a highly engaged critical and creative community. The post-holder will work closely with DCRC professors and the centre director, with engagement across the research centre network.

You'll be based in the Pervasive Media Studio, where the DCRC is a lead partner. Located in Watershed <http://www.watershed.co.uk> on Bristol’s Harbourside, the Studio is an open plan and diverse community with a culture of generosity and curiosity - sharing ideas and exploring experience design and creative technology.

Amongst other criteria you will have experience of:

  * Publication of research in relevant areas
  * Planning and facilitation of hands-on practice-based workshops
  * Project Management
