at the Department of Communication

Communication studies is a social science with a diversity of research methods. Its core is the indirect public communication, transmitted by mass media. The Department of Communication of the University of Vienna, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, announces a vacant post doc position within the field of Journalism Studies, working with Prof. Folker Hanusch.

As part of their research, candidates are expected to be interested in comparative journalism research especially changes in the journalistic field. Appointees are further expected to take an active role in the development and supervision of new research projects in the research group.

Duration of employment: 6 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

- Participation in research, teaching and administration

- Participation in research projects

- International publishing and presentation activities

- Development of applications for research funding

- Preparation /Finalization of a (publishable) habilitation

- Teaching assignments according to the regulations of wage agreement

- Examination activities

- Support of students

- Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance

- Participation in administration of the department

Profile:

- PhD in the communication studies or related disciplines

- Track record of international publications and academic presentations

- Knowledge in empirical journalism research, comparative communication research or changes in the journalistic field would be of advantage

- In-depth knowledge of methods of empirical social research, especially statistical data analysis (e.g. SPSS, MaxQDA, N-Vivo)

- Knowledge of principles of teaching / e-learning

- High command of written and oral language

- High level of computer literacy

- Excellent English skills both written and spoken

- Experience in knowledge management

- Experience in (external) fundraising

- Ability to work in teams

- Knowledge of university structures and processes advantageous

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

- Participation in research, teaching and administration

- Possibility to write a PhD dissertation

Profile:

- Postgraduate degree MA, MSc (or equivalent) in communication studies or a related field

- Knowledge in one ore more of the following areas of advantage: comparative journalism research, journalism and change, visual communication

- Competence in survey research, in-depth interviews and/or content analysis

- Familiarity with data analysis, SPSS competencies an advantage

- Knowledge of principles of teaching

- High command of written and oral language

- Excellent English skills both written and spoken

- High level of Computer literacy

- Ability to work in teams

- Knowledge of university structures and processes advantageous
