Ussher Assistant Professor in Sonic Arts

The Department of Music seeks to appoint an Ussher Assistant Professor 
in Sonic Arts with expertise in one or more of the following areas: 
Music Technology, Performance Studies, Electronic, and Electroacoustic 
Composition. Applicants should have a specialism in arts and technology, 
an established publication record of international significance, and 
experience teaching at university level. The successful candidate will 
be able to offer undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Music 
Technology and Composition, attract and supervise postgraduate research 
students, and show flair for innovative and collaborative course design. 
The appointee’s scholarly, creative, and/or practice-led work will 
contribute to the research activity of the School. They will also be 
expected to undertake appropriate administrative responsibilities, as 
directed by the Head of Department.

Appointment will be made at a maximum of the 8th point of the New 
Assistant Professor Merged Salary Scale.

- Cover letter (maximum 1 x A4 page)
- Full curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and also to 
include names and contact details of 3 referees (email addresses, if 
possible).
- Representative portfolio (in Word or PDF format only) of 
scores/projects/links to any available recordings (e.g., on SoundCloud), 
or other documentation together with a writing sample, which could be a 
dissertation chapter/excerpt, published article, or review.
- Research plan (summarising projects to be carried out in the next two 
years and including details for funding to be sought (2 x A4 pages maximum).
- Teaching statement, summarising experience and approach (2 x A4 pages 
maximum) and any available past teaching evaluations.

Role of the Ussher Assistant Professor
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Show the potential to develop a strong individual and collaborative 
research profile and contribute to the development of research student 
activities.
- Explain their research through peer-reviewed publications and at 
conferences.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to exploring opportunities for 
external research funding.
- Contribute to the department’s teaching at both undergraduate and 
postgraduate levels.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary modules at both undergraduate and 
postgraduate levels.
- Assist with examinations.
- Supervise B.A., M.Phil., M.Litt. and Ph.D. dissertations.
- Undertake appropriate administrative tasks, as directed by the Head of 
Department, including work relating to recruitment, admissions, 
curriculum development, student engagement, and pastoral care.
- Attend key department and School events (research seminars, etc.).
- Help develop links and partnerships with the wider community.

Research
- Have an established record of achievement, in peer-reviewed 
publications or documented performances in well-regarded venues or 
technology projects, as appropriate, and/or experience in practice-led 
scholarship.
- Have proven ability or evident potential to attract external research 
funding.
- Be able to attract postgraduate students.
- Be committed to professional development.

Teaching
- Have the ability to teach a range of Music Technology courses at the 
undergraduate level.
- Demonstrate excellence in university-level teaching (e.g. teaching 
evaluations).
- Have conducted research supervision at postgraduate level.
- Be able to offer a broad range of modules at undergraduate and 
postgraduate levels.
- Be familiar with innovative approaches to teaching including new 
teaching media.
- Have experience working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary 
environment.

Administration
- Have experience in administering student admissions, recruitment, 
engagement.
- Have interest in interdisciplinary research within and outside of the 
creative arts.
- Be able to design and implement programmes, including distance 
learning and summer schools.
