[ecrea] PhD Scholarships at School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds

Wed Nov 04 12:33:08 GMT 2015

*School of Media and Communication CUSP Scholarship*: The Economic and
Social Research Council (ESRC) funded Centre for the Understanding of
Sustainable Prosperity <http://www.cusp.ac.uk/> (CUSP) will launch in
January 2016 and is offering two PhD Scholarships in the School of Media
and Communication: one funded by the ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training
Centre (WRDTC) and one funded by the School. Under the supervision of
Professor Kate Oakley each scholarship will fund research into the role
of arts and culture in sustainable prosperity. The School CUSP
scholarship will commence in September/October 2016. It will cover full
maintenance and fees equivalent to the Home/EU rate, for a period of
three years and is open to both home/EU and international applicants
(please note that the scholarship only pays fees at the rate for home/EU
fees, even to international students). The range of possible topics in
this area is wide but we are particularly interested in receiving
applications that look at the role of cultural work as ‘good work,’ the
role of culture and the arts in communicating understandings of
sustainable prosperity, cultural regeneration and gentrification, and
the development of alternative cultural work models (e.g.
co-operatives). Applications that take a spatial approach to these
issues are particularly welcomed. The precise methodology will depend on
how the research questions are framed, but it is anticipated that the
research will be empirical and involve contact with practitioners or
policymakers. There are extensive, well-established networks which the
researcher will be able to access and there are also opportunities for
joint activities with the other CUSP-affiliated PhD students. Applicants
should normally have already received an offer for PhD study from the
School before applying for the scholarship. Early development of a full
proposal is strongly recommended and is required for the scholarship
application. Please contact (k.oakley /at/ leeds.ac.uk)
<mailto:(K.oakley /at/ leeds.ac.uk)> for further details about the project. The
closing date is 01 March 2016. Please email (mediaphd /at/ leeds.ac.uk)
<mailto:(mediaphd /at/ leeds.ac.uk)> for an application form.
