Sun Nov 29 23:50:31 GMT 2015
The School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds is
currently inviting applications for our PhD programme and is delighted
to offer a record number of scholarships for PhD study in the School.
The School of Media and Communication is one of the top departments in
the country for the study of communication, media and culture, with
research expertise clustered around research groups in cultural
production and media policy; international communication; journalism
studies; political communication; and visual and digital cultures. We
welcome applications in any of these areas and invite applicants to
consult the School website for details of the research groups and
individual staff expertise http://media.leeds.ac.uk/
In addition, this year the School also welcomes subject specific
applications for research aligned with the aims of the Economic and
Social Research Council (ESRC) fundedCentre for the Understanding of
Sustainable Prosperity <http://www.cusp.ac.uk/>__(CUSP) which will
launch in January 2016. Seehttp://media.leeds.ac.uk/pg/phd/for details.
A range of PhD Scholarships are available to those who intend to begin
PhD study in any of the School’s areas of research expertise in
September/October 2016. All scholarships will cover the cost of academic
fees at the University’s standard UK/EU rate, and some will also cover
the cost of academic fees at the University’s international rate. All
scholarships run for three years and provide an annual maintenance at
the UK Research Council rate (£14,057 per year in 15/16). The total
value of a Scholarship in Session 2015/16 was £18,157 (the total value
for those funding international fees was £29,557).
Deadlines for most of the scholarships fall on *2^nd February 2016*.
Applicants are strongly advised to make informal enquiries to the School
or an individual supervisor by *10th December *this year, and to have a
proposal ready by 10th January 2016.
Why Leeds? Our PhD candidates are fully engaged in the School’s vibrant
research culture and are strongly supported throughout their study with
training and supervision. The most recent REF review (2014) placed the
School of Media and Communication in the top ten of all UK departments
in our subject area, and ranked us third when taking into account the
size of submissions (a measure called ‘research power’). Of the research
submitted by the School to the REF 2014, 82% was judged by experts to be
either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ and 100% was
judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in terms of
impact.
We are currently home to over 50 research students and our students
appreciate the quality of the experience provided by the School. In the
2015 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey
<https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/research/surveys/postgraduate-research-experience-survey-pres>our
students ranked the School higher than the Russell Group average in
terms of overall satisfaction with the research degree programme (School
87%, Russell Group average 83%) and expressed 100% satisfaction with
supervisors’ feedback, contact and subject knowledge.
