(Swedish version: http://www.uu.se/jobb/detaljsida/?positionId=76802)
Uppsala University is an international research university focused on
the development of science and education. Our most important assets are
all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication makes
Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala
University has 45.000 students, 6,800 employees and a turnover of SEK
6,300 million.
Description of the PhD position
The selected candidate is expected to work at the crossroads of two
fields: 1/ post-structuralist media studies and 2/ democratic and
participatory communication.
Post-structuralist media studies is an approach that is grounded in an
ontology which departs from the idea that meaning cannot be ultimately
fixated, but become socially constructed through political processes.
Key authors that are used as sources of inspiration for
post-structuralist media studies are: Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan,
Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva and
Judith Butler.
The second component of this PhD project, democratic and participatory
communication, is concerned with the equalisation of power relations
through communicational practices or within communicational (media)
settings. This particular PhD position will focus on 1/the study of
media organisations that are 2/characterized by high levels of
participation, such as for instance community media organisations,
alternative media organisations, civil society media organisations, and
rhizomatic media organisations.
Using the post-structuralist media studies tradition will provide an
innovative angle to the study of the selected maximalist-participatory
media organisations, embedding this PhD project within a social
constructionist paradigm and emphasizing the logics of contingency and
the workings of the political.
Duties
The holder of the PhD position shall primarily devote her/himself to
her/his own doctoral study within the above-described theme. Active
participation in departmental activities such as seminars, workshops,
etc., is expected. Other departmental tasks, including teaching and
administrative work, can also be part of the employment (for a maximum
of 20%). The language of teaching is English or Swedish.

of the position is to be employed at Uppsala University and qualifies
for Swedish social benefits.
