Assistant Professor (probationary, tenure-track) | Mass Communication Law

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication invites nominations and
applications for one full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty
position at the rank of assistant professor. Appointment will be
100%-time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May).
This is a probationary (tenure-track) faculty appointment at the rank of
assistant professor leading to the possible conferral of indefinite
tenure. Salary is competitive.


We are seeking an outstanding scholar with research and teaching
interests in regulatory and administrative law as they apply across
media platforms, including strategic communications, advertising,
broadcasting, and journalism. This new position will complement existing
strengths in First Amendment, freedom of information and privacy, and
comparative media law.


Qualifications:

Successful candidates for this position will show outstanding promise of
sustaining a vigorous program of original research and publication with
potential for external funding, and show promise of excellence in
graduate level teaching and advising (both M.A. and Ph.D.). They should
demonstrate the capacity and commitment to teach undergraduate academic
courses such as regulatory and administrative law, law of the Internet
and social media, and copyright and intellectual property law, as well
as the required undergraduate journalism course in Law of Mass
Communication. They will also be prepared to teach graduate level
courses in media law and ethics research methodology, as well as First
Amendment theory, both within the SJMC graduate program and as part of
the dual degree (M.A./J.D.) program with the University of Minnesota Law
School.


A terminal degree in mass communications (Ph.D.) is required. Candidates
who also hold a law degree (J.D.) are preferred.


Candidates will be evaluated according to a) overall quality of their
academic preparation and scholarly work, b) relevance of their scholarly
research to the school’s academic priorities and fields of inquiry, c)
evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and d)
strength of recommendations.


About the Position:

Faculty in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the
College of Liberal Arts are expected to maintain an active research
program, teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and
contribute service appropriate for the rank of appointment to the
department, college, University, and profession.
