About Us

Edge Hill is a dynamic university with a clear sense of direction, a forward-thinking culture and significant resources to invest in its future. Shortlisted for University of the Year in 2014 by the Times Higher Education, this is the fourth time in seven years that the University has been a finalist for this prestigious accolade. Edge Hill also came top in the North West in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction, boasts high levels of graduate employment and is one of the top two universities in the UK for social mobility. The University seeks exceptional individuals to join our intellectually stimulating, creative and inclusive community set in the outskirts of a pleasant market town, with easy access to nearby cities of Liverpool and Manchester.

About the Role

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is home to a large and diverse group of disciplines with a track record of excellence in research, much of which crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. We are particularly keen to continue to build our research capacity and welcome applications for PhD studentships. The studentships will be combined with Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs).

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) hold a unique position in the University, being both registered students and carrying out teaching/teaching support duties (of up to 6 hours per week on a term time only basis per annum subject to the needs of the particular course/module).

Payment for teaching hours will be in the region of £7,380 per annum and each GTA will receive a ‘package’ which includes a combined salary (for teaching or support to teaching as appropriate) and full waiver of postgraduate tuition fees as well as a scholarship of in the region of £5,000 per annum or free single room postgraduate student accommodation on campus (subject to availability). GTAs will benefit from both a supportive and structured project of research towards the award of a PhD and training and experience of teaching and the support of learning. The large variety of skills training and development will equip students for a variety of different career paths.

About You

Students will be expected to:

* Successfully undertake an initial programme of accredited research training. * Undertake a PhD programme of research under the supervision of an appointed supervisory team. * Enhance the research culture of the faculty in which they are located and the University by participating in events, conferences and training.
* Successfully complete a programme of teacher training.
* Undertake up to six hours teaching a week.

How to apply

Applicants must submit:

* A completed online application
* A full academic curriculum vitae to include two independent academic references
* A ‘Research Proposal’ which should not exceed 2,000 words in length

Applicants should normally have, or be about to obtain, a Masters qualification in a subject relevant to the studentship for which they are applying.

Details of the subject areas within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including the research interests and contact details for each department can be found at edgehill.ac.uk/fas/
