[ecrea] Postdoc position available at the University of Bergen
Thu Jul 31 14:09:21 GMT 2014
Postdoc position in Information Science at the Department of Information
Science and Media studies
At the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, the Faculty
of Social Sciences, a 3-year post doc position is available in the area
of information science/computational social science.
The position is linked to the project "Diversity in the Norwegian Media
Landscape: A Hybrid Model for Evaluating Media Policy", financed by the
Norwegian Research Council. The postdoc project will develop automatic
computational methods for use in analyses of diversity and pluralism in
the Norwegian media landscape.
The “Diversity"-project will collect data to establish the pluralism of
voices, sources and contents in the news media, compare across
geographic regions and media corporations, and analyse agenda setting
mechanisms in the media landscape. The data will comprise large samples
of digital content: textual and audio-visual journalistic stories from
newspapers, broadcasting, online and mobile media, published locally,
regionally and nationally. The postdoc will work closely with the
project leader and with project collaborators to develop and advance
methods for automated collection and quantitative analysis of the data.
The aims of the “Diversity"-project include:
* Develop robust, secure and reliable methods for collecting data on
four different technological platforms (online, mobile, broadcasting,
newspapers)
* Digitize analogue media formats for computer supported analysis
* Automatic recognition and classification of voices and sources in the
news and their affiliations
* Topical detection for the automatic classification of news topics
* Tracking news diffusion patterns through the media landscape
* Evaluation of levels of originality, citation and/or republishing in
news media outlets
Further information about the position, and project description, can be
obtained through the project leader Helle Sjøvaag, +47 55589021, e-mail:
(helle.sjovaag /at/ infomedia.uib.no)<mailto:(helle.sjovaag /at/ infomedia.uib.no)>.
Qualifications:
* PhD in information science or equivalent. Applicants must have
submitted their dissertations before the application deadline.
Employment is pending approval of the thesis.
* Fluency in Norwegian (or Scandinavian languages) and English.
* Programming skills (e.g. Java or Python)
Proposal:
Applicants must attach a project description (4-5 pages) outlining how
the project will be carried out. The project description must contain a
research design, a plan of progress, and a publication plan. The
application must also demonstrate how the project is relevant to the
aims of the “Diversity"-project, and its scientific and methodological
relevance to the interdisciplinary aims of the project as a whole. The
project description and its plan of progress will be considered part of
the contract for the position.
Applicants will be evaluated based on the following:
* Scientific qualifications
* Scientific soundness and originality of the proposed project
* The project’s merit in qualifying the researcher for top positions
* Documented ability for independent research, dissemination of results
and publishing at a high international level
* Programming skills and interdisciplinary understanding
The Department of Information Science and Media Studies was established
in 2004 as a merger between the Department of Information Science and
the Department of Media Studies. The Department’s research profile is
characterised partly by the interdisciplinary encounter between media
and information science, and partly by the research traditions specific
to the two disciplines. As this postdoc position is part of a media
studies project, the postdoc will contribute to the interdisciplinary
development of research methods in the intersection between information
science and media studies.
Further information on the research profile of the Department can be
found at www.uib.no/en/infomedia<http://www.uib.no/en/infomedia>.
Candidates may be called for an interview and may also be asked to give
a trial lecture on an assigned topic.
Deadline for applications: 20 August 2014.
