LSE Media and Communications PhD Symposium 2014

Power in Media and Communications: Change or Continuity?

Date: Thursday 5 June 2014, 09:00–18:00
Deadline for abstracts: Monday 31 March 2014

The role and distribution of power is a central issue to media and communications studies. However, there is room for debate as to whether various forms of media, media institutions, mediation practices and communications labour demonstrate substantively new forms of power or if they are simply more recent manifestations of established systems.

This symposium seeks to provide a forum for PhD students to engage with questions of either change or continuity in the media and communications landscape. We invite PhD students to explore changing or continuous forms of power as they relate to the following topics:

- News, journalism and political communication
- Media technologies
- Communications labour and forms of work
- Agency, resistance and forms of protest
- Media regulation, institutions and globalization
- Media, ICTs and development
- Research approaches in media and communications.

Submissions can be works in progress, provocative ideas or engaging questions as well as completed research.

The symposium is particularly geared towards PhD students in the early stages of their research. The emphasis will be on thoughtful discussion and engagement with fellow PhD students, along with feedback from leading academics at the LSE Department of Media and Communications. This year’s keynote speech will be given by Professor Nick Couldry.

The symposium will take place on Thursday 5 June 2014 from 09:00 to 18:00, and will consist of four panels. Each panelist will present their research in 15 minutes, with talks followed by a Q&A session.

Please send abstracts of 150–200 words to:(media.phd.symposium2014 /at/ lse.ac.uk) by Monday 31 March.

Those invited to present will be notified by the end of April.
