The Post

The School of Arts and Humanities wish to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate at Lecturer level to pursue teaching and research in Digital Media and Publishing Studies, to teach and supervise postgraduate and undergraduate students, and to undertake administrative duties as appropriate. The successful candidate will be assigned to CMC and will also have significant additional responsibilities for L&L. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the School of Arts and Humanities’ Digital Media and Publishing Studies’ programmes by developing specialist provision where appropriate, and to supervise doctoral students. The candidate would both maintain existing provision and enable continued growth in the Digital Media and Publishing programmes. The successful candidate will also evidence the capacity to take a development role in communications and publishing studies at Stirling, and will pursue opportunities for collaborative activities in the School, for example with colleagues in Creative Writing, and Law. Applications will be welcome from those who have research specialisms in a range of areas in Digital Media/Publishing Studies. Consideration may be given to candidates able to teach production modules and/or submit practice research of the highest level in print or broadcast. It is hoped that the successful candidate would be able to take up his/her appointment from 1st January 2015.

About Us

Communications, Media and Culture (founded in 1978 as Film & Media Studies) is a major academic centre for the study of film, media and communications, and journalism. The Stirling Media Research Institute (Director, Professor Neil Blain) is at the centre of a strong research culture and the person to be appointed will contribute significantly to its research output. Over 30 PhD students research in CMC, and a regular stream of researchers and scholars visit from abroad. Film & Media at Stirling was awarded a grade 5 in the Research Assessment Exercises of 1992, 1996 and 2001. In 2008, 95% of its output was classed as of international standard and above, with 70% in the top two categories of ‘world-leading’ or of ‘international excellence’. Communications, Media and Culture is currently ranked top in Scotland and 12th in the UK for research in its field, enjoys high overall league table placings for teaching. CMC provides expertise externally in various areas of media and communications policy and practice, and is also the custodian, with the University Library, of important social and cultural archives. In addition to undergraduate programmes in Film and Media, and Journalism Studies, CMC offers a range of taught MSc and MLitt programmes including Media Management, Strategic Public Relations and Communication Management, Gender Studies and Film Studies. Masters programmes are now also delivered overseas, presently in two locations in Vietnam, as well as online.

The Division of Literature and Languages encompasses teaching and research in a wide range of disciplines: English Literature and Linguistics, French, Spanish and Latin American Studies, Religion, Global Cinema and Culture. At undergraduate level, all of these subjects can be taken either as Single Honours or in a variety of programme combinations. We also offer exciting taught postgraduate opportunities for study in Creative Writing, Modern Scottish Writing, The Gothic Imagination, English Language and Linguistics, Publishing Studies, Translation Studies and Film Studies. The Division is also home to the internationally renowned Stirling Centre for International Publishing and Communication (established in 1982). With more than 40 academic staff and over 50 research postgraduates, we foster a vibrant transdisciplinary research culture. We regularly host major international conferences—Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France, 2011; Association of Hispanists, 2012; Shakespeare Association Conference, 2014—and postgraduate students are encouraged to organise study days in their own specialist areas. Our research staff are leading experts in their fields and we have particular strengths in: Book History, Colonial and Postcolonial Studies, Creative Writing, Gender and Sexualities, Gothic Studies, Language and Linguistics, Literature and Religion, Scottish Studies. Our creative writing staff also give us important links to artistic practitioners in Scotland and further afield, who regularly give workshops and readings on campus.
Description of Duties

Module leadership and contribution to teaching across undergraduate digital media modules in CMC and on the MLitt in Publishing Studies and dissertation supervision.

Supervision of research postgraduates in CMC and publishing studies.

Networking and collaboration with media and publishing companies and related organisations.
Essential Criteria

Possession of a relevant, good quality first degree.
PhD.
Excellent research targeted to the regular production of high quality outputs. The ability to generate or participate in research projects likely to enhance the School’s research performance, and an awareness of the research environment and opportunities for future research funding within the UK/EU. Links between research undertaken and research themes of the School of Arts and Humanities, and through them to research excellence in the wider University. Commitment and ability to contribute to the development of postgraduate provision. Teaching skills and experience at Higher Education level, possibly in production modules. Experience of relevant teaching on university undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Effective social, communication and presentation skills.
Ability and willingness to contribute to the professional life of the School as a whole. Demonstrable commitment to the enhancement of the quality of learning and teaching. Commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to both research and teaching. The ability to offer high quality teaching in both advanced and non-advanced modules.
Desirable Criteria

Experience of administration, and ability and willingness to take on administrative roles
