[ecrea] International PhD master class on journalism with Barbie ZELIZER at VUBrussel

Mon Mar 04 11:22:17 GMT 2013

*DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 11 MARCH 2013*

On Wednesday 8 May 2013 Prof. Barbie Zelizer will give a master class at
the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The master class consists of a short
lecture by Prof. Zelizer and a workshop where Prof. Zelizer and a second
respondent will give feedback on and discuss PhD students’ research.

Barbie Zelizer is a Professor of Communication, and holds the Raymond
Williams Chair of Communication and is Director of the Scholars Program
in Culture and Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication,
University of Pennsylvania. A former journalist, Prof. Zelizer's work
focuses on the cultural dimensions of journalism, with a specific
interest in journalistic authority, collective memory, and journalistic
images in times of crisis and war. She also works on the impact of
disciplinary knowledge on academic inquiry.

The master class will start with a short lecture by Prof. Zelizer that
deals with the academic study of journalism as well as the relation
between journalism and the academy.

After the lecture, a maximum of 6 PhD students will get the opportunity
to present their research. Prof. Zelizer and a second respondent
(depending on the topic of the research) will give feedback on each of
the students individually. The master class provides an excellent
opportunity to get feedback on research but also allows for more
informal discussion of theoretical and methodological issues. To this
end, PhD students are also expected to participate actively in
discussion about each others’ research. Each student will have 15
minutes to present his or her research. This will be followed by 30
minutes of feedback and discussion per student.

The master class is interdisciplinary. Students working on journalism
from disciplines such as communication studies, history, law,
linguistics, political science, philosophy, and sociology are invited to
submit. Possible topics include, but are not limited to the following
dimensions of journalism:

- Journalism and collective memory

- Journalism in times of crisis and war

- The place of images in journalism

- Journalism and everyday life

- Journalistic authority, journalism as a profession, journalistic
identity, the ideology of journalism

- The academic study of journalism, journalism and the academy

Students working on other topics related to journalism will also be
taken into consideration. Priority will be given to students who work on
the above topics and on the cultural dimensions of journalism in general.

Interested PhD students should send their academic CV as well as a
300-word description of their research project to
(benjamin.de.cleen /at/ vub.ac.be) by Monday 4 March 2013. A maximum of six PhD
students will be selected by 11 March.

PhD students participating are expected to submit a short research paper
(between 1500 and 2000 words) before 15 April 2013. This paper should
include a short description of the research project including
theoretical framework and methodology, as well as questions to be
discussed with Prof. Zelizer.

A (small) budget is available for the (partial) refund of travel
expenses for students studying abroad. If you are a student travelling
to Brussels from abroad, please indicate your expected travel expenses
in your application for the master class.

Selected doctoral students registered with the VUB doctoral school will
receive 2 ECTS by submitting a paper in time, by presenting their
research, and by active participation in the master class.

Students are expected to read the following text in preparation for the
master class: Zelizer, Barbie (2009) Journalism and the Academy. In:
Wahl-Jorgensen, Karin& Hanitsch, Thomas (eds.) Handbook of journalism
studies. New York& London: Routledge, pp. 29-41 (the text will be

and is organized by the department of Communication Studies of the VUB,
