The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has a
proud history of intellectual rigour and offers a vibrant research and
teaching environment. The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry
(SOPHI) is one of five schools in the Faculty, made up of the
departments of Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History, Gender and
Cultural Studies, History and Philosophy. The school brings together an
exciting group of academics and students who participate in a wide array
of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is home to some of the
leading researchers and teachers in Australia and the world, as well as
regularly hosting prominent visitors and international colloquia.
Applications are invited for a lectureship in Cultural Studies in the
Department of Gender and Cultural Studies. The department has a vibrant
interdisciplinary research culture, including at postgraduate level, and
a reputation for excellence at all levels of teaching. It offers a
dynamic undergraduate curriculum with majors in both Gender Studies and
Cultural Studies and a successful postgraduate coursework program in
Cultural Studies. Applicants will be expected to have knowledge of the
wide range of interdisciplinary approaches used in both Cultural and
Gender Studies.
The appointee will be expected to develop and teach a new postgraduate
unit in Cultural Policy and to coordinate and teach into the large first
year Cultural Studies unit. The appointee will be expected to supervise
honours, master’s coursework and postgraduate research dissertation
students. In addition, they will be expected to pursue an active
research program, participate fully in the department’s research culture
and undertake appropriate administrative roles and curriculum
development as required.
A willingness to engage with and teach a culturally diverse and a very
mixed student cohort is vital, and a familiarity with cultural policy
issues arising beyond the English-speaking world would be an advantage.
Applicants must have a doctorate in Cultural Studies or a related
discipline, demonstrated teaching excellence and the ability to
contribute to more than one area of the department’s teaching. A strong
publication record and clear research potential is essential. Policy
experience or research in the areas of cultural economy, cultural
institutions or cultural geography will be an advantage. Applicants must
also have excellent communication skills and a commitment to teamwork.
Experience in the delivery of curriculum, in the supervision of
dissertations, and in administration in a humanities and/or social
science department is desirable.
Remuneration package (Lecturer, Level B): $104,644 to $124,263 p.a.
(which includes a base salary $88,426 to $105,004 p.a., leave loading
and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
