The University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for 
the position of Dean of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and 
Mass Communication. Established in 1915, the Grady College is one of the 
oldest and most distinguished mass communication programs in the 
country. Its three departments -- journalism, advertising and public 
relations, and telecommunications -- are consistently ranked among the 
very best in the nation.

The Grady College's undergraduate education prepares students for 
careers in the media, advertising and public relations. The more than 
1,400 students currently in the Grady College are among the best and 
brightest in the country. The University of Georgia entering freshmen 
class once again will have a strong GPA that exceeds 3.8. Additionally, 
this class has the highest SAT average in UGA history with a combined 
mean critical reading and math score of 1273, plus an average writing 
score of 614, for an 1887 on the 2400 scale. Admission to Grady College 
is among the most competitive at UGA. On the graduate level, over 100 
Grady College students are pursuing masters and doctoral degrees. The 
College is home to the Peabody Awards, internationally recognized as one 
of the most prestigious prizes for excellence in electronic media and 
the Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism.

The Grady faculty includes some of the most prolific and influential 
scholars in the field. The Grady faculty is renowned for its research 
and teaching; faculty members have been honored with more than 30 awards 
for excellence in teaching. In addition, the Grady faculty includes 
authors of top-selling textbooks about mass communication. A majority of 
Grady College faculty have professional backgrounds, bringing rich

The Dean will provide energetic and visionary leadership, as well as 
principled administrative guidance and advocacy for the mission of the 
College in teaching, research, and public service/outreach. The Dean 
serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College, 
reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. 
The Dean's responsibilities include overall responsibility for 
leadership of the College; strategic planning and analysis of College 
operations; program development for departments, centers and institutes 
in the College; budget development; fundraising; faculty recruitment; 
liaison with department heads, center and institute directors and 
College staff; representing the College to the University 
administration; and alumni relations.

Candidates should have a terminal degree, a distinguished record of 
scholarship and qualify for tenure at the full professor level. The 
successful candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to excellence 
in teaching and research; be able to manage a diverse college with three 
departments; be a strong internal manager with good budgetary skills and 
the ability to work in a collaborative and collegial manner with a 
diverse faculty and staff; as well as encouraging externally supported 
scholarship and have the ability to be a successful fundraiser, working 
with foundations and individual donors.
