[ecrea] DSTL PhD studentship: Achieving Legitimacy in a New Media Ecology
Wed Jun 27 18:17:04 GMT 2012
Following a UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) PhD
programme award a studentship is available on this topic supervised by
Prof. Andrew Hoskins, beginning October 2012 and based in the College of
Social Sciences, University of Glasgow. The funding is up to four years
and covers UK/EU fees, standard living allowance, research costs,
conferences and travel.
Key objective: To explain how commemorations, mediated through emerging
cyber and social technologies, influence public perceptions of the
legitimacy of UK military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Using a mixed methods approach including online ethnography and media
archive mining, this research will investigate public engagement with
and responses to online commemorations – particularly social networking
sites such as YouTube and Facebook. This project will interrogate the
role of online commemorative practices, including memorial websites and
commemorative amateur videos, in contesting and legitimising support for
recent and ongoing UK armed forces campaigns overseas.
Essential application criteria:
A minimum 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline
A Masters level degree (or completion imminent) in a relevant discipline
Experience in online ethnography and in online multimodal discourse analysis
Comprehensive understanding of issues and debates in digital media and
memory studies, and in the cultural memory of modern warfare
Potential applicants should email: (andrew.hoskins /at/ glasgow.ac.uk).
