PhD seminar "Media, Pluralism and Democracy" - Professor Hans T. Blokland - 27 March 2012 VUB Call for papers/presentations of PhD research and work-in-progress on issues related to the theme of Media, Pluralism and Democracy

From 7 to 31 March 2012, professor Hans T. Blokland will be visiting the Media Studies department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel/Free University of Brussels, as the first Corelio Chairholder "Media and Society". Central subjects in the work of Professor Hans Blokland are the meanings and the current relevance of the concepts freedom, autonomy, paternalism, emancipation and power; cultural politics and cultural policy; ethical pluralism of philosophers like Isaiah Berlin and political pluralism of political scientists like Robert A. Dahl and Charles E. Lindblom; the process of modernization (rationalization, differentiation and individualization); the dissemination, potencies and flaws of market and bureaucracy; the development of (the thinking on) democracy, policy-making and planning; etc.

One of the events during professor Blokland’s stay in Brussels is a PhD Seminar on the topic of Media, Pluralism and Democracy. In this PhD Seminar the central concepts and topics in the work of Hans Blokland, in their relation to the broad field of media, communication and culture, can come to the fore.

We cordially invite PhD students from all disciplines to present their research at this seminar on 27 March 2012 at the VUB. The aim of the Seminar is to give doctoral students the opportunity to present their research and discuss it with Hans Blokland and other academics and practitioners. The seminar will set out from a lecture by prof. Blokland on the topic of Media, Pluralism and Democracy. Subsequently, PhD students have the opportunity to present their PhD projects, receive comments and discuss it with the audience. Per PhD student, a maximum of 20 minutes is provided for presentation, with ample time afterwards for comments and suggestions made by professor Blokland, other academics and practitioners.

Overview of requirements



After expressing your interest – by 1 March 2012 – to participate in the Seminar, the head of the selection committee, Prof. Katia Segers will notify you shortly afterwards – no later than 2 March 2012 – of the decision on acceptance of your contribution to be presented during the SeminarAfter acceptance, you are required to send a paper (max. 3000 words) or powerpoint presentation (max. 15 slides) – no later than 22 March 2012 – to prof. dr. Katia Segers, outlining your PhD research setup. The research set-up includes information on the research question, theoretical framework, methodology, structure and research argument of the PhD project. Questions that you would like to see addressed in the Seminar may be included as well. This information allows professor Blokland and other respondents to prepare their comments and have a targeted and vivid discussion on your PhD research.
