Description:

The New Media Program at Purchase College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship starting in fall 2012 with a focus on video. New Media at Purchase is an interdisciplinary B.A. program in the School of Film and Media Studies that bridges the visual, performing arts and liberal arts in which students learn to interact with digital media both as critical consumers and as active producers and involves faculty from across the college. Purchase College is a 4000-student, public liberal arts college, part of the State University of New York system, located on a 500-acre campus 25 miles north of New York City. Purchase College is committed to student-centered, interdisciplinary instruction that integrates curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Applicants should demonstrate that their work and teaching are both dynamic and innovative in the field of media arts. Teaching responsibilities will include foundation classes such as Video Art 1 and Introduction to Media Studies. The candidate will also be expected to teach upper-level courses from his/her area of specialization suitable for students with varied backgrounds. Courses typically include collaborative assignments and formal studio critiques. New Media faculty teach production alongside history and theory of the medium.

Candidates must possess an advanced degree (MFA and/or Phd or the professional equivalent) with a proven exhibition record that demonstrates expertise and in-depth involvement in media arts. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level, or of potential as an effective teacher, is required. Possible research areas might include (but are not limited to) interactive video, live video processing, algorithmic arts, animation, motion graphics and experimental web.Applicants should demonstrate that their work and teaching are both dynamic and innovative in the field of media arts.


The committee will review applications starting October 31, 2011.
